Volunteer Responsibilities & Impact

While volunteering with underprivileged children in Guatemala, you’ll be providing much-needed basic care and pitching in wherever help is needed in daycare and childcare centers. You’ll help serve meals to the kids, assist with homework, teach English, make sure the children get to and from school, and engage them in fun activities like singing, dancing, art, and playing sports or share your skills and knowledge with them.

Your time spent helping these poor children in this volunteer opportunity in Guatemala will have a tremendous impact on their lives. You will show them they deserve love and care, fill their hours with joy, help them recover from their troubled beginnings and set off on a path for a much brighter future. These kids will touch your heart, and your time with them will change you forever.


Skills and Qualifications:

There are no specific skills or qualifications required to volunteer in the Underprivileged Children program in Antigua, Guatemala. You should however, have a love for children, an open heart, be patient and flexible, as well as demonstrate independence and creativity. You should be a good role model for the kids, and ready to make a difference!

A background check is required for volunteers working with children. Though not mandatory, it will be helpful to have basic Spanish skills. If you wish to learn Spanish, we recommend enrolling in our Spanish Language Studies program. You can do a full-week immersion course before starting your project or take classes while you volunteer.

Although anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to volunteer with children in Guatemala. Volunteers who are at least 16 can also volunteer with parental consent. Volunteers below the age of 16 can volunteer only if accompanied by a parent, guardian or faculty leader.


You’re probably wondering what a typical day is going to look like. You can expect to spend about 5 hours per day volunteering, Monday-Friday. Your duties will vary from day to day and based on the needs of the project.

Every day working with the children will be a fun and exciting adventure. Your hours will be full of bringing joy and love to the lives of kids who have lost their families and been through a lot.

Here’s a sample schedule to give you an idea of what to expect:

First Day: On your first day of volunteering in the Underprivileged Children program in Guatemala, you’ll be brought to your volunteer site by our in-country coordinator. You’ll be introduced to the dedicated local staff, and finally get to meet the amazing kids you are there to help!

Orientation: You’ll learn all about your service work, schedule, safety, and the customs and culture of Guatemala.

  • Weekdays : A typical volunteer day will look something like this:
  • 7.00 to 7.30 AM: Enjoy breakfast with your local host family, or if you are staying at the childcare center, help serve this meal to the kids!
  • 7.45 AM: Head out to your placement, and spend the day caring for the children, helping them however they need, have a great time playing, having fun, and bringing joy to their lives.
  • 12.00 PM: Break for lunch. You can head back to your host-family or take a lunch to-go and eat at your project site with your fellow Guatemala Underprivileged Children volunteers. A great chance to make friends from around the world!
  • 3.00 PM: You’ll have your afternoon and evening free to explore Antigua. Your fellow volunteers make great adventure partners.
  • 6.45 PM: Enjoy a traditional Guatemalan dinner with your host family. This is a wonderful way to get immersed in the local culture. Eat new foods, speak Spanish, and learn what it’s like to live in another country.

Global Crossroad volunteer opportunity in Antigua, Guatemala application and registration fee costs US $299. The application fee covers the cost of advertising, program promotion, and office expenses (rent, utilities, and staff salaries in the USA office).

In addition to the application fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee. You will pay your weekly fee directly to your host family and project (via the country coordinator). This way, the fees that you pay will benefit those who rightfully deserve them, and are not for company profit.

The volunteer programs fees in Antigua, Guatemala cover expenses from the first day of your program to the last day of your program. If you arrive before the first day of the program or you decide you stay beyond your program’s last day, you will be responsible for any additional expenses.


Accommodations and Meals

When you volunteer in Guatemala, we take care of your housing and food, so you don’t have to worry about a thing. You’ll have the extraordinary chance to experience our culturally immersive homestay experience.

You’ll stay in one of the clean, safe, and comfortable homes of our socially respected host families, possibly sharing a room with fellow volunteers of the same gender. You’ll share two local meals a day (breakfast and dinner) with your host family, which will also give you a chance to try new food and practice your Spanish!

You probably have a few questions, and we’ve got some helpful answers for you:

Arrival and departure

For our Underprivileged Children volunteer opportunity in Guatemala, you will need to fly into La Aurora International Airport. We recommend our volunteers arrive one day prior to the start date of their project.

Global Crossroad provides airport pickup services to its volunteers. A local representative will be there at the airport terminal waiting to transfer you safely to your accommodations. If you miss your flight or have a delay, let us know ASAP and we’ll rearrange your pick-up.

When you finish volunteering at an Underprivileged Children Program in Guatemala, you’ll be responsible for your own departure transport. You can just set up a taxi to the airport. Or, you can plan some more travel for a little adventure before you head back home!

Visa

Vaccination

Before you head off to Guatemala to volunteer with underprivileged children, make sure you meet with your doctor and get up to date on your vaccines. The last thing you want while volunteering abroad is to get sick.
