Volunteer Responsibilities & Impacts

When you join volunteering orphanage program in Peru, you’ll be making a big impact by supporting the efforts of the hardworking orphanage staff as they provide compassionate care to orphans, and a much-needed safe haven in a harsh world that has not been kind to these kids. Some of your duties as a Peru orphanage volunteer will include:

Skills and Qualifications

There are no specific qualifications to join our Peru orphanage volunteering opportunity, and we welcome volunteers from a variety of backgrounds from around the world. You will need a love of children, a lot of patience, a kind heart, and a dedication to helping orphans in need.

Beginner to intermediate knowledge of Spanish is preferred. This will allow you to connect more with the kids you are volunteering to help. If you cannot speak Spanish, we recommend enrolling in our Spanish program in Cusco. You can do this for a week-long immersion before you start your project or take classes while volunteering.

Every day you spend as an orphanage volunteer in Peru will be a rewarding and enriching experience. You’ll be connecting with amazing kids that have fallen on hard times and need your help and kindness.

Your actual hours worked will vary based on your final placement, but you’re probably curious what a typical day might look like.

Here is sample daily schedule to give you an idea:

  • First Day: On your first day as a Peru orphanage volunteer, our in-country coordinator will bring you to the orphanage and introduce you to the caring and dedicated local staff. You’ll meet the amazing kids you are traveling across the world to help!
  • Weekdays: A typical volunteer day might look something like this:
  • 6.00 to 7.30 AM​: Enjoy a traditional breakfast with your Peruvian host family to begin your day.
  • 7.45 AM: Head out to the orphanage and get ready for an exciting and meaningful day volunteering with children in Peru. Make a difference in the lives of kids in need!
  • 12.00 PM: Ask your host family for a lunch to go and eat at your project site. Help serve food to the kids, and bond with fellow volunteers and the local project staff.
  • 3.00 PM: When you’re done with your volunteer work for the day, you’ll have the rest of the time to explore the city of Cusco. Go exploring on and off the beaten path!
  • 6.45 PM: Enjoy a traditional Peruvian dinner with your local host family. Speak Spanish, learn about a fascinating culture, and experience daily life in another country with your welcoming new international friends.

All volunteer programs in Peru start at the beginning of each week. Global Crossroad is very flexible and understands that various travel constraints that you might face.

All volunteer work in Peru options are available year around, except at times programs like a volunteer teaching English overseas program might be closed for various holidays and vacations. Also, some programs are seasonal due to extreme weather conditions. Between the project link and a Global Crossroad representative, all of this specific information regarding programs dates will be available to you. If a program is unavailable, we will provide an alternative program for you to join.

Global Crossroad's volunteer program in Peru application and registration fee cost US $299. The application fee covers the cost of advertising, program promotion, and office expenses (rent, utilities, and staff salaries in USA office).

In addition to the application fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee. You will pay your weekly fee directly to your host family and project. This way, the fees that you pay will benefit those who rightfully deserve them, and not for company profit.

The volunteering overseas in Peru program fees will cover expenses that will begin on the first day of the program (usually the first or third Monday of the month) to the last day of the program. If you arrive before the first day of the program or you decide you stay beyond your program’s last day, you will be responsible for the additional expenses, which would typically be around $30 a day for room and meals at a hostel.

Accommodation and Meal

Arrival and departure

You’ll be flying into the Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport when you join us as a volunteer in Peru in orphanage program. We suggest arriving a day early so you can rest up before beginning your volunteer project.  

Just give us your flight details, and we’ll set up an airport pick up as part of your volunteer fee. We’ll have a trusted local representative waiting for you when you land, and they’ll take you safely to your accommodations. If your trip gets delayed, just let us know and we’ll rearrange things for you.


You’ll need to obtain a tourist visa, so be sure to do your research ahead of time based on your home country. People from places such as the USA, UK, Canada and Australia are eligible for getting an on arrival visa when they land at the airport in Peru.

Before you travel to Peru to volunteer with orphans, you’ll need to get up to date on your vaccines. Make an appointment with your doctor to discuss your trip and find out what you need.
