Volunteer Responsibilities & Impacts

When volunteering in orphanage program in Uganda, your focus will be on helping with the day-to-day care of the children. You will also be responsible for providing formal and information education opportunities. There are many areas in which volunteers can support the children and ongoing activities that take place at the orphanage. Your commitment to this orphanage project in Uganda will have monumental and positive effects on these children’s lives. Depending on the individual interests and skills, volunteers may be involved in any of the following activities:

  • Teaching basic conversational English skills and other subjects like math, science, and art
  • Developing creative free time programs, such as dance, art, music, and other physical activities
  • Helping the children with various health and personal hygiene needs
  • Teaching important life skills
  • Housekeeping, cooking, and serving food to the children, as well as the administrative and operational center staff
  • Assisting the children with their homework
  • Taking the children on cultural excursions
  • Escorting the children to school
  • Visiting homes where other children are with caregivers and or guardians

These activities are just a tip of the exciting activities that await you in Uganda. There will be many tasks to do which will vary from day to day depending on the schedule of the school. Skills and Qualifications

No specific qualifications are required to join a Uganda orphanage volunteer program. However, you will be required to be passionate about caring for children in addition to being compassionate, kind, patient, open minded, creative, and flexible.


Working as a volunteer, your days will be fun, exciting and full of new experiences. You’ll have a great opportunity everyday to share your love, skills and passion for children to impact real changes in the community.

Each orphanage has its own needs, tasks and program, there is no fixed schedule for each day, but be prepared to help at all time with different exciting tasks.
Here is a sample daily schedule:

First Day: On your first day of orphanage volunteer program in Uganda, you will be accompanied to the orphanage by a local coordinator and introduced to the local staff you will be working with. The rest of day you will have an orientation about the country, safety, project, rules and regulations of the project,

  • Weekdays: A typical volunteer day will be as follows:
  • 6.00 to 7.30 AM​: You will wake up positively and  ready for traditional local breakfast.
  • 7.45 AM:  Following breakfast it is time to head out and make positive change in the community by performing tasks like teaching, administrative duties.
  • 12.00 PM: It is lunchtime you may choose to share a local Ugandan meal with the children or colleagues at the orphanage.
  • 3.00 PM: Work usually ends at this time You are free to travel home, prepare for the next day or even head out for coffee in the local shopping center.
  • 6.45 PM: Time to get home for a family dinner. This is your opportunity to learn more about Uganda and its rich traditions and culture

Fees

In addition to the application fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee. You will pay your weekly fee directly to your host family and project. This way, the fees that you pay will benefit those who rightfully deserve them, and not for company profit.

The Uganda volunteer opportunity program fees will cover expenses that will begin on the first day of the program to the last day of the program. If you arrive before the first day of the program or you decide you stay beyond your program's last day, you will be responsible for the additional expenses, which would typically be around $30 a day for room and meals at a hostel.


Accommodation and Meal

While volunteering in orphanage program in Uganda, a loving, friendly and respectable family in the community will accommodate you. Depending on the situation, you may stay in our safe and sound volunteer house. You will receive three delicious meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) a day from Monday to Friday and ensure that you are safe and comfortable. Be ready for comfort, as the home offers modern facilities including fans and running water and western-style toilets.

Free Time and Weekend Exploration

There will be enough time to explore while volunteering in Uganda orphanage! Everyday you will work an average of 4-5 hours leaving you plenty of time during the week to check local places around you. Additionally, over the weekend you will be able to go on longer trips across the country.

Volunteer in Uganda Orphanage: FAQs

Arrival and departure

You need to arrive at the Entebbe International Airport to take part in our orphanage volunteer program. We suggest you to be in Uganda one day before your assignment actually begin.

Global Crossroad arranges airport pick up services for our volunteers. Please send us your final flight details after your ticket is confirmed. Our airport representative will pick you up at the airport and transfer to your host family. However, we do not provide any kind of airport drop off services but your in-country coordinator or your host family will be more than happy to assist you get transportation.

Visa

Volunteers traveling to Uganda need to obtain a visa either upon arrival or through a Ugandan diplomatic mission, unless they are from a visa-exempt country. All visitors must have a passport valid for at least six months. Since July 1, 2016, Uganda has been issuing electronic visas (e-Visas). If you have an e-Visa, you must carry a printed copy of the confirmation. The e-Visa has replaced the visa-on-arrival option, so you should apply for your tourist visa online before traveling. Vaccination

Volunteers need specific types of immunizations before joining Uganda volunteering program. It is always recommended and advisable to the Center for Disease Control's website for traveler's health recommendations. These are some of the vaccines that you need to have: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, cholera, yellow fever, rabies, meningitis, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR).
