Volunteer Responsibilities & Impacts

When you join orphanage volunteer program in Tanzania, the focus will primarily be on offering formal and informal education opportunities, in addition to offering the children a safe and happy home. There are many areas in which you can support the ongoing activities of these orphanages. However, you help though; it will make a huge difference. Here is sample daily schedule:

First Day: On your first day of volunteering in orphanage program in Tanzania, you will be escorted to the orphanage by a local coordinator who will introduce you to the local staff you will be working with.  You will have the rest of the day to familiarize yourself with the country, safety and rules and regulations of the project,

  • Weekdays: This is what you will typically expect your day to look like in Tanzania:
  • 7.00 to 7.30 AM:​ The day will start positively with a delicious traditional local breakfast shared with your host family.
  • 7.45 AM:  After breakfast its time to leave for a new day full of experiences ranging from teaching to administrative duties and extra curriculum activities. .
  • 12.00 PM: At noon lunch is usually served. You can enjoy the meal with the children or colleagues at the orphanage.
  • 3.00 PM: Work usually ends at this time. You can now spend your free time exploring exotic surroundings of Tanzania.
  • 6.45 PM:After a long day its time to settle down and take it all in with sumptuous dinner, It will also be your opportunity to learn more about Tanzania and its rich traditions and culture

Free Time and Weekend Exploration

There will be enough time to explore while working in our Tanzania orphanage volunteering program. You will work for 4-5 hours, from Monday to Friday, leaving you plenty of time during the week to check local places around you and experience diverse animal and human culture. You will be able to travel far across the country during the weekend from hiking mount Kilimanjaro to taking a Safari in the Serengeti.

Arrival and departure

You will be arriving at the Kilimanjaro International Airport to participate in our Tanzania orphanage volunteer opportunity. We recommend you arrive in Tanzania a day before your actual assignment begins.

Global Crossroad will arrange airport pick up services for you. Please send us your final flight details after your ticket is confirmed. Our airport representative will pick you up at the airport and transfer to your host family.

However, we do not provide any kind of airport drop off services but your in-country coordinator or your host family will be more than happy to assist you get transportation.

Visa

When participating in Volunteer in Tanzania orphanage program you need to obtain a business visa (not tourist visa). National of USA, UK, Australia and Canada can obtain visas on arrival at the airport. However, it is always advisable to apply in advance at the nearest Tanzanian embassy.

Vaccination

There are certain types of vaccinations that you will need to take while joining orphanage volunteering program in Tanzania. It is always advisable to refer to the Center for Disease Control's website for traveler's health recommendations. These are CDC recommend vaccinations for Tanzania: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, yellow fever, rabies, meningitis, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis), chickenpox, shingles, pneumonia and influenza.
