Volunteer Responsibilities & Impacts

When committing to volunteering work in an orphanage in India, you will teach English and other subjects such as geography, history, music, computer skills, and arts and crafts. You also will provide free time activities: playing music, singing songs, drawing pictures and a multitude of other creative-based entertainment options.

In many cases, you will help to prepare food, keep the premises and the children clean, and develop creative extracurricular activities. Teach English (3-4 hours a day) in orphanage or school that orphans attend

  • Personal hygiene: help with brushing teeth, showering and general cleanliness

Skills and Qualifications

No specific qualifications are required to volunteer in India orphanage project, but your understanding of Indian culture and language can be strengthened by enrolling in our one-week Language and Cultural Immersion program.

You will be required to have love for children, empathy for their unfortunate circumstances and willingness to share their passion with them. It is important that you are kind, hardworking and be able to communicate easily with the children.

Maximum volunteer age is 65 years.

Working as a volunteer, your days will be fun, exciting with new experiences everyday. You’ll have a great chance to share your love, skills and passion with children to impact positive changes in the community.

Each orphanage in India has its own needs, tasks and program, there is no fixed schedule for each day, however, you should be prepared to help at all times with different and fun tasks.

  • First Day: - On your first day of volunteering in India orphanage project, you will be taken to the orphanage by a local coordinator and introduced to the local staff that you will be working with. You will spend the rest of day with orientation about the country, safety, project rules, and regulations of the project.
  • Weekdays: - You will start working on the project on second day, while each day will provide a fresh experience, a typical day will look like this:
  • 7.30 AM – You will enjoy a delicious Indian breakfast ready to start a fun and exciting day.
  • 8.00 AM - 9.00 AM – After the children set out for school and you can assist with cleaning, planning activities or lesson plans that are fun for you and the children.
  • 1.00 PM – You will break for lunch around noon. This will be an opportunity to help serve the children with food and eat together or you can share a local Indian lunch with fellow volunteers
  • 2.00 PM – Around this time you will be free to go around the local area do some shopping and sightseeing around the area.
  • 4.00 PM – Children return to the orphanage from their school day. This is your chance to show your passion through teaching children English, Math, or any other subjects including conservation and personal hygiene, drawing, painting, rhymes and many other topics.
  • 7.00 PM– Over dinner you will enjoy a delicious local healthy Indian dinner, which you will share with your host family it will also be a chance to learn more about India.

Global Crossroad's volunteer program in India application and registration fee cost US $299. The application fee covers the cost of advertising, program promotion, and office expenses (rent, utilities, and staff salaries in USA office).

In addition to the application fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee. You will pay your weekly fee directly to your host family and project. This way, the fees that you pay will benefit those who rightfully deserve them, and not for company profit.

How your fee is allocated?

The India volunteer experience program fees will cover expenses that will begin on the first day of the program (usually the first or third Monday of the month) to the last day of the program. If you arrive before the first day of the program or you decide you stay beyond your program’s last day, you will be responsible for the additional expenses, which would typically be around $30 a day for room and meals at a hostel.

Accommodation and Meal

You will be very comfortable in India. While working in the orphanage volunteer project in India, you will live with our host family or in the orphanage hostel. The rooms are very comfortable, clean and safe featuring modern facilities including western-style toilets, running water and electricity.  You will also be provided with three local delicious meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) per day.

Free Time and Weekend Exploration

You will have enough time to visit and explore gorgeous India while working in GCR’s volunteering projects. Monday through to Friday, you will work an average of 4-5 hours leaving you plenty of free time during the week to check out local places around you. Additionally, over the weekend you will be able to go on longer trips, you can visit the other cities around India.

Volunteering in India Orphanage: FAQs

Arrival and Departure

To join orphanage volunteer project in India, you will have to fly into Indira Gandi International Airport one day before the start date of the project. Airport pick-up will be arranged.

Contact our local country coordinator as soon as possible if there are any flight contingencies such as missed flights and delays/cancelled flights due to bad weather. Also, Global Crossroad won’t be arranging any airport drop-off service after the completion of its volunteer projects but local staff will be able to help you get the best transportation to the airport.


You have to obtain a tourist visa in order to work in our orphanage volunteer in India. You can visit the embassy of India or a consulate in your home country to apply and obtain a tourist visa before your flight to India.

How far is the project from the accommodation? How do I commute daily?

You will either be housed on site at the orphanage or within a 10-20-minute walk of your placement, eliminating the necessity of daily transportation.

How many hours a day do we work while volunteering in orphanage abroad in Nepal?

There are always plenty opportunities around the orphanage for you to work additional hours doing things like cleaning, washing, shopping and cooking. On average, working hours are 4-5 hours a day from Mondayto Friday. You will have two free days over the weekend to tour around the country.

The children that you will care for  will most likely become quickly and strongly attached to you. It is important that you remain a positive role model for these children. It is also advised that you do not leave the premises after dusk.
