Volunteer Responsibilities & Impacts

Please bring your cameras to capture moments when they happen in Kathmandu's busy streets. In this project, you will have a personal schedule and accompany the supervisor (an experienced professional, who works for a respected local newspaper) to events and locations, usually via motorcycle as part of this unique volunteer experience in photojournalism in Nepal.

Volunteering in photography in Nepal is a very meaningful project. You will work alongside professional photographer to capture meaningful moments in the streets. Most of the photography will be those impromptu things that are happening everyday that are sometimes not captured. While exploring you will have a chance to experience Nepal first hand and travel far and wide even live like a local experiencing unique ceremonies and traditions.


Skills and Qualifications

You must know how to operate a camera and understand the concept of modern photojournalism. Environments are fast-paced in which quick thinking is important. You must also be comfortable following direction and taking instructions. Insight into Nepalese language and culture is also valuable when doing volunteer work in photojournalism in Nepal – consider enrolling in our one-week language studies and cultural immersion program.

You will be expected to be patient, kind, passionate about photography and be detail oriented.


While in Nepal, your days will be fun and exciting full of new experiences taking photos around the country. You’ll have great opportunities everyday to practice your photography skills and learn new techniques.

In Nepal, you will work on different sites and go to different functions. Each day will be different and fun. Just be prepared to go far and wide taking different photos and helping with fun new tasks and activities such as editing.

  • First Day: On your first day of volunteering in photo journalism Nepal project, you will meet the professional photographer that you will be working with. You will spend the rest of the day to familiarize yourself with the country, safety and rules and regulations of the project.
  • Weekdays: - This is what you will typically expect your day to look like in Nepal
  • 9.00 AM – You will start your day with high energy, with a delicious traditional Nepalese breakfast shared with your host family or the other volunteers.
  • 10.30 AM - 12.00 PM – After breakfast its time to leave and meet your supervisor to discuss on the project and day activities. Usually you and your supervisor will travel to different parts (cultural and historical) or public events to document.
  • 12.00 PM - 12.30 PM – Around noon lunch is usually served. You can enjoy the meal with other volunteers or photographers.
  • 1.00 PM -5.00 PM – You will be out taking photos and visiting fun and amazing projects for work.
  • 7.30 PM – After a long adventurous and fun day its time to settle down and eat dinner, It will also be your opportunity to share with your family all the things you experienced during the day, as you learn more about Nepal and its rich traditions and culture.

The volunteer trip to Nepal program fees will cover expenses that will begin on the first day of the program (usually the first or third Monday of the month) to the last day of the program. If you arrive before the first day of the program or you decide you stay beyond your programs last day, you will be responsible for the additional expenses.


Accommodation and Meal

You will be very comfortable while in Nepal. GCR will offer you accommodation in either a volunteer house, or with a local host family. All accommodation options are located in a safe and serene neighborhood offering you the safety you need while volunteering in photo journalism project in Nepal. Your new home away from home is comfortable, safe and clean offering you a secure living space. You will experience great comfort with modern facilities including running water, free WIFI and western-style toilets. Volunteer in Nepal Orphanage: FAQS

Arrival and Departure

You need to fly into Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu for our photojournalism volunteer project in Nepal. You will be required to fly into Nepal one day prior to the start date of your volunteer project.

Global Crossroad will provide you with airport pickup services. A local representative will be waiting for you at the airport. However, GCR does not offer airport drop-off service at the end of your project, but your in-country coordinator or host family will be more than happy to help you arrange this.

Visa

You need to obtain a tourist visa to work on our photojournalism program. You can obtain a tourist visa from the Embassy of Nepal in your home country. A single entry tourist visa for 90 days will cost you exactly $100.

If you have no time to go to the embassy, there’s on-arrival-visa available at the airport for the citizens of USA, UK, Australia, Canada, etc. You can extend your visa if you wish to continue working in our photojournalism volunteer Nepal programs. Just pay a quick visit to the Immigration Department in Kathmandu or Pokhara. And make sure to bring your original passport and some photos.

Vaccinations
