Organized sports teach children about teamwork and sportsmanship, motivate healthy lifestyle choices, and keep them off of the street and away from vulnerable and dangerous situations. When volunteering in South Africa teaching physical education, you will have a unique opportunity to help improve the present and future lives of the children with whom you work with.

Role of Volunteer

You will be placed in either a sports coaching position at a local school or at one of the soccer camps in the area if you join a volunteer abroad in South Africa teaching physical education. These will vary depending on the location, resources available, and the level of trained staff. It should be noted, however, that some volunteering in South Africa teaching physical education projects are very well structured, while others lack infrastructure and resources.

Almost all of the sports projects are funded through subsidies, donations, and grants, which contributes greatly to the management and structure of each program.

You will work Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., but these times may vary depending on the specific activities planned. You will be responsible for helping with basic sports coaching and fitness training, helping teach a healthy lifestyle awareness program, and contribute to team building exercises.

Skills and Qualifications Needed

We only require that you have a love and passion for sports and working with children to join a volunteer trip to South Africa teaching physical education. Besides that, it is encouraged that you possess a willingness to help whenever help is needed, and to just have fun with the kids as you teach them sports and recreation.

Global Crossroad's volunteer program in South Africa application and registration fee cost US $299. The application fee covers the cost of advertising, program promotion, and office expenses (rent, utilities, and staff salaries in USA office).

In addition to the application fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee . You will pay your weekly fee directly to the country coordinator, who in turn will allocate it to your host family, project and other in-country support we offer to our volunteers. This way, the fees that you pay will benefit those who rightfully deserve them, and not for company profit.

The volunteering trips in South Africa program fees will cover expenses that will begin on the first day of the program (usually the first or third Monday of the month) to the last day of the program. If you arrive before the first day of the program or you decide you stay beyond your program’s last day, you will be responsible for the additional expenses, which would typically be around $30 a day for room and meals at a hostel.
