There is a lot of untapped talent that could change children lives forever if it is properly managed, causing a high demand for physical education educators and we urgently need your help in our volunteer opportunity in South Africa.

Volunteer Responsibilities & Impacts

You will be placed in either a sports coaching position at a local school or at one of the soccer camps in the area. These will vary depending on the location, resources available, and the level of trained staff.

It should be noted that some volunteering in South Africa in teaching physical education projects are very well structured, while others lack infrastructure and resources. You will be responsible for helping with basic sports coaching and fitness training, helping teach a healthy lifestyle awareness program, and contribute to team building exercises.

Teaching Physical Education in South Africa is a very meaningful project. Skills and Qualifications

No specific qualifications are needed to join this South Africa Volunteering opportunity. This project needs you to be filled with deep love and passion for children and a desire to make the world a better place. We recommend that you be ready to just have fun with the kids as you teach them sports and recreation.

Minimum volunteer age is 18 years.


Working as a sport teacher volunteer, your days in South Africa will be fun filled and exciting with many sporting activities planned for you and the children. Everyday you will be able to share your love and passion with children, which really makes an impact in their lives.

In South Africa we work with several schools and each has its own needs, tasks and program, therefore, there is not such a fixed daily schedule as tasks vary every day.  It will be fun and fulfilling to take on as many tasks as you could.

Here is sample daily schedule:

  • First Day: On your first day of volunteering in South Africa program, you will be escorted a local coordinator and introduced to the local staff you will be working with at the school. The rest of the day you will get to familiarize yourself with the duties, facilities and the children.
  • Weekdays: A typical day for you will look something like this:
  • 7.00 to 7.30 AM​: You will share a delicious South African breakfast with your host family or other volunteers in the house.
  • 7.45 AM:  You will then head out for a full day of fun activities like playing with the children, teaching sports skills to the children, exercising and some administrative work.
  • 12.00 PM: Around noon lunch is served; you can choose to share a local nutritious South African meal with the children or with your fellow teachers.
  • 3.00 PM: Work at the placement usually ends. You are now free to travel home, prepare for the next day or do some shopping and sightseeing around the local area.
  • 6.45 PM: Dinner is served around this time. You will enjoy a local meal with your host family and you will have plenty of time for stories and cultural exchange.

Global Crossroad's volunteer program in South Africa application and registration fee cost US $299. The application fee covers the cost of advertising, program promotion, and office expenses (rent, utilities, and staff salaries in USA office).

In addition to the application fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee . You will pay your weekly fee directly to the country coordinator, who in turn will allocate it to your host family, project and other in-country support we offer to our volunteers. This way, the fees that you pay will benefit those who rightfully deserve them, and not for company profit.

How your fee is allocated?

The volunteering trips in South Africa program fees will cover expenses that will begin on the first day of the program (usually the first or third Monday of the month) to the last day of the program. If you arrive before the first day of the program or you decide you stay beyond your program’s last day, you will be responsible for the additional expenses, which would typically be around $30 a day for room and meals at a hostel.


Accommodation and Meal

While volunteering in South Africa, you will stay at our well managed volunteer house. You will also be served with two home cooked local meals (breakfast and dinner) per day. The home is comfortable and secure featuring running water, electricity and western-style toilets.

Free Time and Weekend Exploration

While in South Africa, you can be assured to spend a considerable amount of time exploring and touring the country. You will have plenty of free time every day after work since you only work for about 4 to 5 hours per day. Over the weekend this will be the time to travel to the rest of the country to explore the amazing scenery and experience the South African culture and cuisine.

Arrival and Departure

You need to fly into Cape Town International Airport in Cape Town or other major international Airports of South Africa to participate in our South Africa volunteer ing programs. Make sure to check your placement for more details. It is always advisable to arrive in South Africa a day prior to the start of your assignments.

We offer airport pick up services for all our international volunteers. Our airport representative will pick you up at the airport and transfer to your placement. However, GCR does not provide airport drop off services but your in-country coordinator will be happy to advice you on how to best get there.

Visa

You need to get a tourist visa. You can get on arrival visa depending on your nationality. Visa can be extended by visiting the South African immigration office. Please visit the following site  for more information in details.

Vaccination

You need to get certain kinds of vaccination and immunizations before you join South Africa volunteering projects. Please visit the Center for Disease Control's website for traveler's health recommendations. These are certain vaccines that the you should get before traveling to South Africa such as Hepatitis A &B, Malaria, Rabies, Typhoid vaccines.
