India is an array of culture and religious diversity. It is a country with unique game parks such as the world famous Bandipur filled with exotic wildlife including the Asian leopard, elephants and tigers.

Although Taj Mahal is the highlight of India, the country has other unique places to visit including Humayun Tomb and Biwi ka Maqbara.

Despite the fact that India is one of the fastest developing countries in the world gender division remains a problem. Unfortunately, poverty, social division, and superstitious beliefs victimize thousands of women and young girls in India.

Many of these women are both poor and illiterate. Through GCR’s volunteering with the women’s empowerment project in India, you will help obtain our main goal of building self-reliance by developing skills in knitting, paper bag making, and stitching.

When you join women empowerment program in India, It will be a very special opportunity to travel to a new country, explore all the culturally and natural wonders of this unique place while making a significant difference in the present and future lives of women.

Volunteer Responsibilities & Impacts

This Global Crossroad's volunteer women’s program in India focuses on development and empowerment of deprived women. You will provide assistance, education (teaching English), and practical skill guidance to disadvantaged women and girls. You will assist in many issues crucial to the lives of India's women:

  • Teaching English
  • Teaching any income generating skills
  • Micro-finance development
  • Training in social and practical work skills
  • Informal and formal education

Volunteering to empower women is a very meaningful project in India. Your passion will help grow and teach women new skills and lesson to improve their productivity and business skills. By loving and supporting the women, they will have a renewed confidence to run their own moneymaking businesses. Additionally, the skills you teach will help them give them confidence to create project that will empower the future generations.


Skills and Qualifications

Generally, no specific qualification is required to volunteering with women’s empowerment project in India, but it is always appreciated if one possesses social work experience. You should have a passion to work with women and a willingness to share your love and passion with them.

You should understand the difference in cultures and lifestyles. Your experience in this project can be enhanced by enrolling in our one-week Language and Cultural Immersion Program that will strengthen your understanding of Indian culture and Hindi language.

Maximum volunteer age is 65 years.


While working in India with the women, your days will be filled with fun experiences and tasks. You’ll have the opportunity everyday to share your love, passion and skills with women and children to change the future course of their lives.

Each center in India has its own needs, program and activities. There is no fixed or exact daily schedule or tasks while working with the women. Get prepared to help in a range of different exciting tasks and activities when needed.

  • First Day: - On your first day of women’s right volunteer opportunity in India, you will be taken to the center by a local coordinator and introduced to the local staff you will be working with. In the course of the day you will also familiarize yourself with the facilities, the women and rules and regulations of the project.
  • Weekdays: - A typical daily schedule would be as follows:
  • 7.30 AM – Your day will begin with love and a healthy local Indian breakfast shared with your host family.
  • 8.30 AM – After breakfast, you will check out for a rewarding day. In the day you will spend time teaching the women, working with the women and taking other administrative tasks that you will be requested.
  • 1.30 PM – At noon you can enjoy lunch with the women as you learn more about them or return to your host family for a delicious home cooked local meal.
  • 2.00 PM - 4.00 PM – Your work will end around this time and you will have a great opportunity to go exploring and touring the nearby areas or shop in the numerous local markets.
  • 7.00 PM - 9.00 PM – You will share a delicious and authentic family dinner with your family and this is your chance to learn more about Indian traditions and culture.

Global Crossroad's volunteer program in India application and registration fee cost US $299. The application fee covers the cost of advertising, program promotion, and office expenses (rent, utilities, and staff salaries in USA office).

In addition to the application fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee. You will pay your weekly fee directly to your host family and project. This way, the fees that you pay will benefit those who rightfully deserve them, and not for company profit.

How your fee is allocated?

The India volunteer experience program fees will cover expenses that will begin on the first day of the program (usually the first or third Monday of the month) to the last day of the program. If you arrive before the first day of the program or you decide you stay beyond your program’s last day, you will be responsible for the additional expenses, which would typically be around $30 a day for room and meals at a hostel.


Accommodation and Meal

When you join women volunteering program in India, You can expect comfortable, safe and secure accommodation while working in India. You will stay with a respectable and loving local family. They will welcome you to their home that is clean, fitted with all modern facilities including western-style toilets and running water. For compatibility, your host family is well respected, educated and able to provide you a good opportunity to learn and immerse yourself in Indian culture. In addition, they will serve you with three home-cooked local healthy meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) per day.

Free Time and Weekend Exploration

You will have a lot of time to explore while volunteering in India women empowerment program. You will only work around 4-5 hours a day from Monday to Friday, leaving you plenty of time to explore and discover the local area. In you free time you can go shopping, check out restaurants in the area or even go to shopping in the local markets. Over the weekend, you will have two days to take longer trips and excursions all across vast India and explore the country.

Safety and In Country Support

While you volunteer in women project in India, your safety is our top priority. GCR’s women empowerment project is carefully selected and vetted to ensure your safety.  Additionally, every year international officials from GCR travel to reevaluate the project and ensure that it is safe and secure for you to work.  While in India you will be supported by the in-country coordinators who are always ready to assist you with anything you need.

Women Empowerment Volunteer India: FAQs

Arrival and Departure

You will fly into Indira Gandi International Airport in order to work in support women’s group volunteer program in India. You are recommended to arrive in India one day before the start date of your volunteer project.

Our local representative will be waiting for you at the airport. In case you miss your flight or the flight gets cancelled, do inform us immediately. However, GCR do not offer any airport departure services after the completion of our volunteer programs.

Visa

In order to get entry into India and work on support women’s group volunteer projects in India, you will need to get a tourist visa. You can get it by visiting the official embassy of India in your home country. Make sure to bring your original passport and photos for that.

Vaccinations

Vaccination for diseases like Tetanus, Japanese encephalitis, Yellow fever (YF), Adult diphtheria, Varicella, Typhoid, Rabies, Oral polio, Hepatitis B, Meningococcal, and Hepatitis A are needed to visit India.

Is there any other important information you want to share about this project?

Please come to India with a flexible and open mind. The Women Empowerment Project in India does not have any fixed work or schedule. This project involves other several programs like education, job training, and health, so you are expected to be very flexible. You may also need to develop a program yourself (like English teaching) to women. If you are flexible, proactive and creative, than this is the best option.

Most of the women in India are regarded as second-class citizen and they are not given the same opportunities as their male counterparts. Most of these women are illiterate and lack saleable skills to earn money. When you volunteer in this project, you will educate them about their rights and teach them various skills like sewing, knitting etc. The education you give them helps to make them independent.
