Volunteer Responsibilities & Impacts

Depending on your skills and qualifications, as a volunteer with the medical program in Cambodia you will be involved in a variety of tasks. This includes shadowing/assisting local doctors, promoting disease prevention and health education, providing basic care, recording patient details, assisting with administrative work and more.

Due to regulations, you will not be doing major diagnostic work or surgery, but rather shadow and assist local doctors and learn from them.

Your work will provide incredible relief to both the doctors you work with and the patients you care for. Not only that, you will have a lifechanging experience in an exciting and beautiful country while also greatly enriching yourself through hands-on experience in the medical field.


Skills and Qualifications

In order to volunteer with the medical project in Cambodia you need to have some form of medical qualifications either as a doctor, nurse or medical student. You also need to be a kind and loving person with great passion for helping people in need and a desire to share your love with those less fortunate.

You should also be flexible and patient, as well as willing to tackle new and interesting challenges on a daily basis.

Volunteers must be between 18 to 70 years old


Every day you spend in this medical program in Cambodia will be an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling experience. Not only that, but your schedule will allow for plenty of time to explore all the greatest sights of Cambodia.

On arrival at the airport, you will bet met by your local coordinator who will transport you to the volunteer house where you’ll have the rest of the day to get settled in and meet your new roommates.

  • First Day: On the first day of volunteering in Cambodia in medical program, your local coordinator will bring you to the clinic or hospital and introduce you to the staff. The rest of the day will be spent getting to know the placement and preparing for your upcoming responsibilities.
  • Weekdays: Your work in the medical project starts on the second day of the project, and while each day will vary and present exciting new experiences, a standard day looks like this:
  • 7.00 to 7.30 AM: You start the day with a delicious homecooked breakfast at the volunteer house. You can enjoy it together with your new roommates or take it with you to the work placement.
  • 7.45 AM: At this time you depart for a fulfilling day of providing healthcare to those in need. You will spend the day at the clinic performing various vital tasks and gaining valuable medical volunteering experience.
  • 12.00 PM: Around noon you’ll have a break for lunch, which is a great time to get to know your new colleagues and immerse yourself in their culture and way of life.
  • 3.00 PM: Your work at the placement will end at this time, and the rest of the afternoon and evening is your free time to enjoy everything the local area has to offer.
  • 6.45 PM: A delicious Cambodian dinner completes your day, and you’ll eat together with your fellow volunteers letting you make new friends and partake in cultural exchange.

Global Crossroad's volunteer program in Cambodia application and registration fee cost US $299. The application fee covers the cost of advertising, program promotion, and office expenses (rent, utilities, and staff salaries in USA office).

In addition to the application fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee. You will pay your weekly fee directly to the country coordinator, who in turn will allocate it to your host family, project and other in-country support we offer to our volunteers. This way, the fees that you pay will benefit those who rightfully deserve them, and not for company profit.

Accommodation and Meal

Global Crossroad arranges your accommodation in a safe and comfortable volunteer house in Phnom Penh. Here you will share a room with fellow volunteers of the same gender, and each room comes with comfortable beds, fans and modern bathroom facilities. Reception is also manned for your convenience and three delicious and authentic Cambodian meals are provided every day. Volunteers working outside of Phnom Penh city will stay with our carefully chosen host families.

Medical Volunteering Cambodia: FAQs

Arrival and departure

You must fly into Phnom Penh International Airport in order to work on our medical volunteer opportunity in Cambodia. Arriving in Cambodia one day before the start date of your volunteer project is highly recommended.

Our local representative will be waiting for you at the airport. You will then be transferred safely to your accommodations soon after meeting up with our representative. In case you miss your flight, or the flight gets cancelled, inform us immediately.

However, keep in mind that we do not offer any airport departure services after the completion of our medical Cambodia volunteer program. You are responsible for arranging this yourself.

Visa

In order to get entry into Cambodia and work in our medical volunteer projects, you will need to get a tourist visa. You can visit the official embassy of Cambodia or a consulate in your home country and apply for tourist visa. Make sure to bring your original passport and some photos.

Vaccination

For our medical volunteer program in Cambodia, vaccinations for diseases like Japanese Encephalitis, Malaria, Measles, Hepatitis A, Rabies, Typhoid, Yellow Fever, and Hepatitis B are compulsory.
