Volunteer Responsibilities & Impacts

While volunteering with the HIV/AIDS prevention volunteer opportunity in Tanzania, you will care for and offer support to HIV/AIDS infected children and adults. You will also offer counseling and education through local clinics, hospitals, and community programs to increase awareness, personal risk perception, and prevention among men and women.

Help is needed by various organizations with community outreach programs including: hospice care, recreational and educational programs, voluntary HIV/AIDS counseling and testing, and educational seminars and conferences on the virus within the local communities. You will play a very important role in this program. You will also:

  • Care for and offer support to HIV/AIDS infected individuals
  • Counsel and education in hospitals and communities
  • Increase "personal risk perception" among the youth, men and women by involving them to actively participate in HIV/AIDS preventive education in the community
  • Assist various HIV/AIDS organizations in their community outreach programs, such as hospice care, recreational and educational programs, voluntary HIV counseling and testing, and educational seminars and conferences

Skills and Qualifications

No specific qualifications are needed to join our HIV volunteering program in Tanzania. While anyone over 18 years can join, you need to be loving, caring, kind, and compassion. Patient and flexibility goes a long way while working with sick people.


While volunteering in Tanzania, all your days will be filled with joy and excitement. You will have the opportunity to work with local doctors, nurses and HIV affected people and their families.

There is not such a fixed daily schedule as volunteering works vary every day. However, here is how you’re typical daily schedule would look like:

First Day: On your first day of Tanzania volunteering program, you will be escorted to your placement by a local coordinator who will introduce you to other local staff and volunteers. You will spend the day getting to know them and learning the facilities and your responsibilities.

Weekdays: A typical volunteer day is as follows:

  • 7.00 to 7.30 AM​: Start you day positively because it will matter and enjoy local family breakfast at your host family home
  • 7.45 AM:  Following breakfast, you will make your way to the center and engage in several activities including care and counseling the patients.
  • 12.00 PM: You will break for lunch and eat together with your colleagues as you get to know each and share experiences.
  • 3.00 PM: Around this time you will generally finish your tasks and the rest of the day you are free to check in to local town and share a drink or Tanzanian coffee with your colleagues
  • 6.45 PM: At the end of a successful day return home to enjoy a traditional dinner while sharing your cultural differences.

Accommodation and Meal

While volunteering in Tanzania program a respectful and loving family will host you. Free Time and Weekend Exploration

You will spend 4 to 5 hours everyday, from Monday to Friday working at the center leaving you plenty of free time to visit various sites and attractions in the local area. On the weekends you have Saturday and Sunday to travel around the country for excursions and tours, either in the Serengeti or the beach.

Arrival and departure

When you join volunteering in Tanzania programs for HIV/AIDS you will be flying to the Kilimanjaro International Airport. We recommend you to arrive in Tanzania a day before your project starts.

Global Crossroad will arrange airport pick up services for you. Please send us your final flight details after your ticket is confirmed. Our airport representative will pick you up at the airport and transfer to your host family.

However, we do not provide any kind of airport drop off services but your in-country coordinator or your host family will be more than happy to assist you get transportation.

Visa

You will need to get a business visa (not tourist visa) for participating in Tanzania volunteering program. Certain foreign nationals can get single entry visas upon arrival such as USA, UK, Australia and Canada. To get visa extension you need to visit the nearest Tanzanian embassy in person. Vaccination

You always have to have specific kinds of vaccinations for volunteer in Tanzania programs. We advise you to visit the Center for Disease Control's website for traveler's health recommendations.

These are some of the vaccines that you need to have with you: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, yellow fever, rabies, meningitis, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis), chickenpox, shingles, pneumonia and influenza.
