Volunteer Responsibilities & Impacts

As a medical volunteer in Tanzania, your duties may include assisting local medical personnel and taking on various tasks independently at the clinic or hospital. Certified volunteers assist with outpatient department services and dispense medications and deliver injections and immunizations. You will also support health education via community outreach programs and assist with family planning and antenatal services. All of your roles will make a huge difference! Some of your duties might include:

  • Examining and working directly with patients
  • Assisting doctors and nurses
  • Treating minor injuries
  • Working to complete hospital administrative duties, such as record-keeping
  • Educating patients on the importance of sanitation, hygiene, nutrition, etc.

You will shadow local doctors and learn mostly from observation. Due to inherent risk involved and medical regulations, volunteers cannot treat patients or become involved in surgery during the project.


Skills and Qualifications

It is highly recommended that you have certification or proof of experience in a medical field, such as an EMT or paramedic certification, or nursing or physician's credentials to join medical volunteering program in Tanzania. You should also be a kind and patient person.

Each hospital and clinic in Tanzania has its own needs, tasks and program, there is no fixed schedule for each day, but be prepared to help at all time in a wide range of exciting tasks and activities.

Here is sample daily schedule:

First Day: On your first day of volunteering in medical program in Tanzania, you will be accompanied to the hospital by a local coordinator who will introduce you to the local medical staff and doctors you will be working with.  You will have the rest of the day to familiarize yourself with the country, safety and rules and regulations of the project,

  • Weekdays: This is what your typical day will look like
  • 7.00 to 7.30 AM​: Start your day positively with a delicious home-cooked breakfast  will be served by your host family
  • 7.45 AM:  You will set out to leave for the hospital for a day filled with many exciting activities including treating patients and administrative work.
  • 12.00 PM: Lunch is served around this time and you can have lunch with your new colleagues or fellow volunteers as you share experiences.
  • 3.00 PM: Work officially ends around this time, and you have the rest of the day to check out the local community around you.
  • 6.45 PM: A local traditional dinner will be shared with your host family as you get to learn more about their culture.

Accommodation and Meal

When you volunteer in Tanzania medical program, a family will host you throughout your stay. The family will provide you with a safe and comfortable home, with modern facilities including western toilets, running water and electricity. Additionally, they will serve you with three healthy local home-cooked meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) per day.  Our host families are respected members of the community and they will welcome you to their home and teach you their culture and traditions as well as guide you as you adjust in to your new life.

Free Time and Weekend Exploration

In Tanzania it will not be all work and no play. You will volunteer from Monday to Friday for only 4-5 hours a day. There will be ample time to discover the local area and all it has to offer. Over the weekend you will have two days to go on excursions and tours around the country, you will be able to take a trip the national parks or even check out the beaches.

Medical Volunteer Tanzania: FAQs

Arrival and departure

Make sure to arrive at the Kilimanjaro International Airport, Tanzania to participate in our medical volunteer opportunity in Tanzania. We recommend you to arrive in Tanzania one day prior to your assignments begin

Global Crossroad arranges for your airport pickups. Ensure that you send us your final flight information once your ticket is processed and completed. Our airport representative will pick you up from the airport and transfer you to your host family who will be happy to welcome you to your new home.

At the end of the project we do not offer airport drop off services.

Visa

< You will need a business visa (not tourist visa) to join Tanzania medical volunteering program. On arrival visas are available for USA, UK, and Australia and Canada nationals at the airport upon arrival. You can get a visa extension by visiting the nearby Tanzanian embassy in person.

Vaccination

You need certain types of immunizations before heading to participate in medical volunteering program in Tanzania. To get more information on vaccinations and immunizations you need to visit the Center for Disease Control's website for traveler's health recommendations.

We highly recommend these vaccinations for Tanzania: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, yellow fever, rabies, meningitis, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis), chickenpox, shingles, pneumonia and influenza that you should not miss out on.

Will I be working in a hospital or a clinic when I join this medical volunteering in Tanzania project?

The clinic in Tanzania typically do not have very much work to offer volunteers, so most likely you will be placed in a hospital where you can observe the functionality and diversity of the different departments.

By whom are medical volunteers supported?

Depending on your medical background, you will either be supported by fellow MDs or someone from the medical staff. Either way the person with whom you work alongside will translate for you and help you to communicate with the patients. Your coordinator will help you figure out your transportation to and from your placement location.

Are there any other details volunteers should be aware of before volunteering in medical program in Tanzania?

We always suggest to medical project volunteers that they bring any medical supplies that they can, as medical supplies is obviously vary valuable in hospitals and very lacking in Tanzania. Also, please make sure to take your own scrubs and stethoscope with you.
