Volunteer Responsibilities & Impacts

You can think of our dental volunteer opportunity in Peru as an educational internship. You will be shadowing and observing experienced dentists and dental assistants as they perform a variety of dental tasks you’ll need to master for your future career. These might include fluoride treatments, cleanings, filling cavities, removing teeth, fitting caps, etc.

This program will have a huge impact on preparing you for your future career in the dental field. You will learn many techniques and procedures you will need to know, and you will benefit from seeing up close and personal what it’s like to treat patients with this behind the scenes look at dental care. This project looks great on your resume!


Skills and Qualifications

We welcome dental students and graduates from around the world to join us in our Peru dental volunteer opportunity. You will need to be enrolled in an accredited institution and be able to present a valid student id or have graduated from your program. If you’re pursuing a future career in dental healthcare, this is the project for you!

Spanish language skills are not required, but they will help you make the most out of your experience as the dentist will be speaking to the patients in their native language.


Every day as a dental volunteer in Peru will be fun and filled with learning. You will have so many experiences which will help prepare you for your future career. You can expect to volunteer an average of 5 hours per day, Monday-Friday.

Your actual hours worked will vary based on your final placement, but here is a sample schedule to give you an idea of what to expect:

  • First Day: On your first day volunteering in Peru dental program, our in-country coordinator will bring you to your placement and introduce you to the knowledgeable dentist and assistants who will be mentoring you.
  • Orientation: You’ll learn all about the project, your schedule, safety protocol, and the customs and culture of Peru.
  • Weekdays: A typical volunteer day may look something like this:
  • 7.00 to 7.30 AM​: Fuel up for the day with a traditional breakfast shared with your welcoming host family.
  • 7.45 AM:  Head out to your placement, and spend the day being mentored by experienced dental professionals, getting lots of great experience that will help you in your future career!
  • 12.00 PM: Break for lunch. You can ask your host family for a meal to-go to eat at your project site and spend the time bonding with your fellow dental volunteers in Peru.
  • 3.00 PM: After you are done volunteering for the day, you will have plenty of free time to explore the exciting city of Cusco!
  • 6.45 PM: Enjoy a traditional dinner with your host family, practicing the local language and eating regional cuisine!

All volunteer programs in Peru start at the beginning of each week. Global Crossroad is very flexible and understands that various travel constraints that you might face.

All volunteer work in Peru options are available year around, except at times programs like a volunteer teaching English overseas program might be closed for various holidays and vacations. Also, some programs are seasonal due to extreme weather conditions. Between the project link and a Global Crossroad representative, all of this specific information regarding programs dates will be available to you. If a program is unavailable, we will provide an alternative program for you to join.

Global Crossroad's volunteer program in Peru application and registration fee cost US $299. The application fee covers the cost of advertising, program promotion, and office expenses (rent, utilities, and staff salaries in USA office).

In addition to the application fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee. You will pay your weekly fee directly to your host family and project. This way, the fees that you pay will benefit those who rightfully deserve them, and not for company profit.

The volunteering overseas in Peru program fees will cover expenses that will begin on the first day of the program (usually the first or third Monday of the month) to the last day of the program. If you arrive before the first day of the program or you decide you stay beyond your program’s last day, you will be responsible for the additional expenses, which would typically be around $30 a day for room and meals at a hostel.


Accommodation and Meal

When you join a dental volunteering program in Peru, you will be staying with a welcoming and experienced local host family, an amazing chance to immerse yourself in Peruvian culture. You’ll get three meals a day with your host family of traditional Peruvian cuisine. You can ask for a lunch to go to take to your project site. Practice the local language around the table, participate in traditional customs, and learn more about this fascinating culture!

There’s a lot that goes into planning a volunteer trip abroad, but Global Crossroad is here to help you. You’ll need to do a little research before you go, but the internet is a sea of information and it’s hard to know where to look first. To make things easier on you, we’ve compiled some helpful info to answer some key questions you’re probably asking yourself:

Arrival and departure

You will be flying straight into the Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport on your Peru dental volunteer trip. You should arrive one day before the start of your scheduled program date. As soon as you book your flight, give us your details and we’ll make sure someone is waiting for you when you land to take you safely to your accommodations.

Once you complete your project, you’ll need to set up a taxi to head back to the airport, or on to further travels. Why not make an adventure out of your trip and see a few more sites before you head back home?

Visa

You must obtain a tourist visa to volunteer in Peru in dental program.  On arrival visas are available for citizens of certain countries inlcluding USA, UK, Canada, and Australia. Do some research based on your home country to see what you’ll need to do.

Vaccination

The last thing you do not want while on your Peru dental volunteering opportunity is to get sick. Protect yourself before you travel by making an appointment with your doctor and getting up to date on needed vaccines.
