Volunteer Responsibilities & Impacts

When you join this volunteer teaching English opportunity in Guatemala, you will teach basic conversational English skills, literature, and inspire your students to learn in creative ways. Some of your duties as a volunteer will be:

Skills and Qualifications

There are no specific qualifications required to join our volunteer teaching English opportunity in Guatemala. The main thing you will need is a love for children and a passion for teaching. You don’t need teaching credentials, and anyone can participate, but future teachers will love this opportunity to advance their future career!

Beginner to intermediate knowledge of Spanish is preferred. If you can’t speak Spanish, we recommend enrolling in our Spanish Language Studies program, which can run simultaneously with your volunteer project, or you can immerse yourself in this program for a week prior to your project.


Get ready for fun filled days helping kids in need and pursuing your passion for teaching. You’ll be volunteering in our Guatemala teaching program an average of 5 hours a day, Monday- Friday.

Since you’ll be teaching English in a local school, you can assume your hours will coincide with the local school day. Hours can vary based on your final placement, but here’s a sample schedule to give you an idea of what to expect:

First Day: On your first day of volunteering teaching English in Guatemala, you will be escorted to your placement by our local coordinator and introduced to the dedicated local teachers you’ll be working with. You’ll get the chance to finally meet the wonderful kids who will be your students!

Orientation: You’ll learn all about your teaching opportunity, your schedule, safety protocol, and the customs and culture of Guatemala.

  • Weekdays: A typical volunteer day might look something like this:
  • 7.00 to 7.30 AM​: Enjoy a traditional breakfast with your local Guatemalan host family to start your day.
  • 7.45 AM:  Head out to the school and get ready for an exciting day of volunteering teaching English to Guatemalan children in need.
  • 12.00 PM: Take a lunch to-go from your host family and share it with fellow volunteers and local project staff, making friends from around the world.
  • 3.00 PM: Your afternoons and evenings will be free to explore the unique city of Xela, and truly experience daily life in Guatemala.
  • 6.45 PM: End the evening with a delicious meal of Guatemalan cuisine shared with your host family. Practice Spanish and learn more about their culture!

All volunteer in programs in Antigua, Guatemala start every Monday. However, Global Crossroad is very flexible and understands that various travel constraints that you might face.

All volunteering overseas in Antigua, Guatemala options are available year around, except at times programs like a volunteer teaching English overseas program might be closed for various holidays and vacations. Between the project link and a Global Crossroad representative, all of this specific information regarding programs dates will be available to you. If a program is unavailable, we will provide an alternative program for you to join.

Global Crossroad's volunteer opportunity in Antigua, Guatemala application and registration fee cost US $299. The application fee covers the cost of advertising, program promotion, and office expenses (rent, utilities, and staff salaries in USA office).

In addition to the application fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee. You will pay your weekly fee directly to your host family and project. This way, the fees that you pay will benefit those who rightfully deserve them, and not for company profit.

How your fee is allocated?
Airport Pick up and Transfer to Xela from Guatemala City- $40 to $80 (depending on type of accommodation)
Spanish Classes: (Monday-Friday) 2 hours a day: $50/ week

The volunteering programs in Antigua, Guatemala fees will cover expenses that will begin on the first day of the program (usually the first or third Monday of the month) to the last day of the program. If you arrive before the first day of the program or you decide you stay beyond your program’s last day, you will be responsible for the additional expenses, which would typically be around $30 a day for room and meals at a hostel.


Accommodation and Meal

Volunteer English teachers in Guatemala will stay in the clean, safe, and comfortable home of a local host family in Xela, Guatemala. Before you hop a plane to Guatemala, you probably have a few questions. Here’s some helpful info to provide you with some answers:

Arrival and departure

To join our English teaching volunteering opportunity in Guatemala, you will be arriving at the Aurora International Airport. We suggest you come to Guatemala a day before your project starts. Give us your flight details, and we’ll make sure someone is waiting for you when you land that will safely transport you to your accommodations.

If you have a delay or change in your plans, be sure to let us know and we’ll make the needed adjustments to your pick-up. We do not provide departure transportation as part of your volunteer fee, so be sure to budget for a taxi to the airport when you finish up volunteering.

Visa

Vaccination
