Intern or volunteer with us at a local clinic and EMT service through our esteemed volunteering in a medical clinic in Cortes, Costa Rica program. You will get to shadow, and work under the supervision of, well-trained bilingual doctors, EMTs, and medical professionals. Gain medical experience while learning in a friendly and helpful environment. This placement gives volunteers/interns an opportunity to experience the daily work experience of a medical professional, while expanding their knowledge of the field through hands-on experience. The clinic prides itself on giving high quality treatment to locals as well as visitors from all around the globe, so volunteers/interns will have the chance to meet patients from around the world.

Interns/volunteers help from the moment a patient arrives by greeting them in a professional manner, charting their medical history and current medical problem, taking their stats and vital signs, and possibly more, depending on the emergencies and patients that come in that day. Some interns will also have the chance to ride in the ambulance with and assist the first response paramedic team. Role of Volunteer

When you volunteer abroad in a medical clinic in Cortes, Costa Rica, you are expected to be professional at all times, as well as respectful and able to work on their own initiative (recognizing what needs to be done or who needs to be helped). You will help with charts, vitals, shots, possibly assistance in ambulance rides, and much more. This is a hands-on position and we try to put volunteers in a position to learn through experience in a safe and professional atmosphere.

Skills and Qualifications Needed

You must be at least 18 years of age, have health insurance, and be certified in both CPR and first aid in order to join the volunteer in a medical clinic opportunity in Cortes, Costa Rica; proof is required upon acceptance to the program. Beginner to intermediate knowledge of Spanish is preferred (but not mandatory), although All volunteers should plan to study basic medical terminology and verbs in Spanish before arrival. If a volunteer cannot speak Spanish, we suggest that he or she enrolls in our Spanish language program as it will make their stay and experience more rewarding for both the volunteer and the project they are working on.

Global Crossroad's volunteer program in Costa Rica application and registration fee cost US $299. The application fee covers the cost of advertising, program promotion, and office expenses (rent, utilities, and staff salaries in USA office).

In addition to the application fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee. You will pay your weekly fee directly to the country coordinator, who in turn will allocate it to your host family, project and other in-country support we offer to our volunteers. This way, the fees that you pay will benefit those who rightfully deserve them, and not for company profit.

The volunteering overseas in Costa Rica program fees will cover expenses that will begin on the first day of the program (usually the first or third Monday of the month) to the last day of the program. If you arrive before the first day of the program or you decide you stay beyond your program’s last day, you will be responsible for the additional expenses, which would typically be around $30 a day for room and meals at a hostel.
