In the low-income favela (shanty town) communities, most schools do not have the teachers or funds to support proper English learning programs.

Role of Volunteer

When you join the teach English in Brazil program, you will be helping young students with their studies in English and other subjects. You have the ability to vastly improve the future of your students. You will be working with students from low-income backgrounds. Daily activities may include:

  • Planning lessons in English
  • Leading classes in English
  • Helping students with their homework
  • Reinforcing life skills, including sewing, cooking, cleaning, gardening, and painting
  • Managing development enhancing activities like sports, art projects, music, drawing, and games
  • Organizing extracurricular activities, such as music, dancing, sports, art, games, etc.
  • Promoting nutrition and health
  • Tutoring children
  • Assisting school administrators with daily tasks
  • Helping with the basic maintenance of schools

*You will have the opportunity to become involved with numerous volunteer projects while in Rio de Janeiro. You will not be confined to the one project you register for; there is a lot of flexibility. Volunteers typically work on numerous projects with different partners. You will be able to learn about other options available upon your arrival.

Skills and Qualifications Needed

While no specific qualifications are required in order to participate in this volunteer opportunity to teach English in Brazil, fluency in Portuguese is highly recommended, as it will help enhance your experience and teaching abilities. You should also have a strong grasp of the English language, if it is not your native language. It is also advised that you have passion for working and playing with young children. Volunteers should be good role models, flexible, patient, caring, creative, responsible, and open minded.

All volunteer programs in Brazil start every Monday of each month. However, if there is travel constrains, you can start any project on any day.

In addition to the application fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee. You will pay your weekly fee directly to the country coordinator, who in turn will allocate it to your host family, project and other in-country support we offer to our volunteers. This way, the fees that you pay will benefit those who rightfully deserve them, and not for company profit.

The volunteering overseas in Brazil program fees will cover expenses that will begin on the first day of the program (usually Monday) to the last day of the program. If you arrive before the first day of the program or you decide you stay beyond your program’s last day, you will be responsible for the additional expenses.
