Volunteer Responsibilities & Impacts

As a volunteer in the medical program in Ghana, your role can range from observational to direct patient assistance, depending on your level of knowledge. An important element of this volunteer program placement is being exposed to healthcare practices in a different culture, which can be a tremendous learning experience.

This is a very rewarding project. You volunteering work provide relief to the local doctor and nurses. Besides, you will have a life-changing medical experience abroad in a beautiful country.


Skills and Qualifications

To participate in medical volunteer program in Ghana, interested volunteers must have certification or proof of experience in a medical field, such as EMT or paramedic certification, or nursing or physician's credentials. Due to the health risks involved, those who are not properly trained in healthcare cannot support this project.


While joining medical volunteering program in Ghana, you can expect to have fun, exciting and new experiences everyday. You will have the opportunity to work with doctors and patients and save lives of people who are desperately in need and at the same learn new skills and experiences.

We work with several hospitals and clinics in Ghana, and each of then has its own needs, programs and activities. There is no fixed program because tasks may vary everyday. Get ready to have a great time while helping at all times.

  • First Day: On your first day of volunteering in Ghana in medical project, you will be escorted to the hospital by a local coordinator and introduced to the medical staff you will be working with. The rest of the day, you will be given an orientation class and after that you take rest.
  • Weekdays: A typical volunteer day is as follows:
  • 7.00 to 7.30 AM​: Your host family will serve you a local delicious breakfast in and share together.
  • 7.45 AM:  Following breakfast, you will set out to leave home and travel to the hospital for a fun day, filled with activities like assisting doctors and teaching first aid
  • 12.00 PM: At noon you will break for a delicious local lunch with your medical colleagues and other volunteers
  • 3.00 PM: Your day ends at this time and you now free to rest and discover the nearby local area
  • 6.45 PM: Your day ends with a traditional Ghanaian dinner together with your host family as you share experiences and culture

All volunteer programs in Ghana start every Monday of each month. However, if there is travel constrains, you can start any project on any day.

Global Crossroad's volunteer program in Ghana application and registration fee cost US $299. The application fee covers the cost of advertising, program promotion, and office expenses (rent, utilities, and staff salaries in USA office).

In addition to the application fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee. You will pay your weekly fee directly to the country coordinator, who in turn will allocate it to your host family, project and other in-country support we offer to our volunteers. This way, the fees that you pay will benefit those who rightfully deserve them, and not for company profit.

The volunteer trip in Ghana program fees will cover expenses that will begin on the first day of the program (usually the first or third Monday of the month) to the last day of the program. If you arrive before the first day of the program or you decide you stay beyond your program’s last day, you will be responsible for the additional expenses, which would typically be around $30 a day for room and meals at a hostel.


Accommodation and Meal

Prepare to live in a comfortable and secure home while working for medical volunteer program in Ghana.  You will stay with a loving, respectful and friendly local host family who will treat you like part of their family. They will also prepare for you three local delicious meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) everyday and make sure you are safe and secure in their home. Your host family has years of hosting experience, and will provide you with a modern and comfortable home featuring western style toilets and electricity.

Free Time and Weekend Exploration

When you join medical volunteer program in Ghana, you will have plenty of free time to explore Ghana. In the week you will work for 4-5 hours and spend your evenings discovering around the city. It is also a chance to join fellow volunteers and discover the area together. During the weekend you will have two full days to travel on longer trip across Ghana and explore.

Medical Volunteer Ghana: FAQs

Arrival and departure

You’ll have to fly into Kotoka International Airport in Accra for our medical Ghana volunteer work program. You should provide proper flight details to our in-country coordinator before boarding the flight to Ghana, to ensure that our local staffs can arrange airport pickup on time.

Ensure you send us your complete final flight information once your ticket processing is completed. GCR offers airport pick-up services to international volunteers. For our local representative to get to the airport on time, you must provide correct flight details. Any last-minute flight changes must be communicated immediately.

Kindly be informed that Global Crossroad does not provide drop off services after the completion of medical volunteer projects but your in-country coordinator will assist you to arrange for transportation to the airport.

Visa

Anyone planning to work in our medical volunteering project in Ghana must obtain a tourist visa from the embassy of Ghana prior to their departure. Depending on your nationality, on arrival visa is available in Ghana. Also, you can extend Ghanaian visa by visiting the immigration office. Vaccination

To volunteer in Ghana, vaccinations for diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, malaria, yellow fever, measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), rabies, typhoid, hepatitis A, meningitis (Meningococcal disease), hepatitis B, polio vaccine, varicella (chickenpox) are necessary.
