Volunteer in South Africa
HIV/AIDS Education

Volunteer Safari South Africa

Overview of the Project

AIDS is a tragic disease and voracious killer, particularly on the immense continent of Africa. In spite of efforts aimed at preventing the spread of this devastating disease, the rate of HIV infection is still rising in many African countries. Added to the poverty and malnutrition already rampant in much of Africa, AIDS is crippling the lives and economies of many nations on the continent, and South Africa is no exception. The need for action now is urgent.

Role of a Volunteer

Location: Cape Town
Project: HIV/AIDS Education
Arrival dates: 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month
Arrival and Departure: Cape Town International Airport
Language Requirement: None
Room and Board: Host family and local food three times a day
Activities: Work in groups preparing & presenting information of HIV/AIDS
Work Hours: 25-35 hours per week

Volunteers will take care of and encourage HIV/AIDS affected children and adults. They will also do counseling and education throughout the hospitals and communities to raise awareness, personal risk perception, and prevention among men and women. As a volunteer you will help various organizations with community outreach programs including: hospice care, recreational and educational programs, voluntary HIV counseling and testing, and educational seminars and conferences on the virus within the local community. Volunteers will teach children and family members that story telling can be therapeutic and help cope with the situation.

Skills/Qualifications Requirements

Volunteers do not require any special skills or qualifications for this project however; volunteers must possess love and willingness to share time and compassion with the people with great patience and high flexibility. Many of the affected need care and encouragement to help deal with the situation and make progress.

Room/Food/Supervision

Most of our volunteers live in a homestay with local host families and they are provided a private room and three meals. The family and volunteers share use of the bathroom and kitchen facilities and you might also have another volunteer living with you. This also provides a local support network beyond the volunteers and program staff. A lot of the volunteers consider their home stay a vital component of their South African experience.
