The nursing home provides a caring home and helpful services to socially vulnerable elders of the community. All the residents in the nursing home were removed from their previous living situations, which involved either neglect or abandonment and placed in the supportive environment of this nursing home by government workers.

Besides needing emotional healing and therapy, the majority also need a great deal of physical assistance. Depending on the state of their current health conditions some residents need help with all basic day-to-day functions. Role of Volunteer

You will the chance to work hands-on with the elders and make a real difference in their lives by volunteering overseas in a nursing home in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Daily duties for volunteers will include creating strong relationships with the residents, helping to serve healthy food, and reading to, playing interesting games with or putting on fun activities for the elders. In some cases volunteers will be responsible for physically assisting elders with day to day tasks and helping with medications. Volunteers in the past have taken vitals, given IVs, and more. Skills and Qualifications Needed

Beginner to intermediate knowledge of Spanish is preferred, (but not mandatory). If a volunteer cannot speak Spanish we suggest that he or she enrolls in our language program, as even a basic knowledge of Spanish will make their stay and experience more rewarding for both the volunteer and the project beneficiaries. Global Crossroad's volunteer program in Costa Rica application and registration fee cost US $299. The application fee covers the cost of advertising, program promotion, and office expenses (rent, utilities, and staff salaries in USA office).

In addition to the application fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee. You will pay your weekly fee directly to the country coordinator, who in turn will allocate it to your host family, project and other in-country support we offer to our volunteers. This way, the fees that you pay will benefit those who rightfully deserve them, and not for company profit.

How your fee is allocated?

The volunteering overseas in Costa Rica program fees will cover expenses that will begin on the first day of the program (usually the first or third Monday of the month) to the last day of the program. If you arrive before the first day of the program or you decide you stay beyond your program’s last day, you will be responsible for the additional expenses, which would typically be around $30 a day for room and meals at a hostel.
