Africa is the world's second-largest and second most-populous continent - after Asia . The continent of Africa is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Suez Canal and the Red Sea to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. There are 46 countries within continental Africa - including Madagascar - and 53 countries including all of the island groups. Africa straddles the equator and encompasses numerous climate areas and is the only continent to stretch from the northern temperate zone to southern temperate zone. Because of the lack of regular, naturally-occurring precipitation and irrigation - in addition to the absence of glaciers or mountain aquifer systems - there are no natural, moderating effects on the climates of Africa, except near the coasts. Presently, Global Crossroad offers Africa volunteer programs in Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, Togo, South Africa and Uganda. Global Crossroad is currently in the process of increasing its volunteering opportunities in Africa by adding additional countries and programs. This program is comprised of local language lessons, extensive orientation, and 1-2 days of travel. The program's basic aim is to offer orientation covering the country, its culture, and ways of life prior to volunteering program in Africa.
Second Phase: the second phase of the volunteering program in Africa is comprised of working in a volunteer service project. Volunteers working in Africa can choose to work in a variety of community service projects including: working in an orphanage, teaching English, HIV/AIDS program, NGOs, etc.
Third Phase: the African volunteering program in Kenya and Tanzania also features optional safaris ranging in durations of 3-11 days. Global Crossroad currently offers these exciting safaris - along with our Kenya and Tanzania volunteer programs - at a discounted rate exclusively to participants volunteering in our Africa programs.
