Frequently Asked Questions

How many countries are offered in your programs?

Global Crossroad currently operates its programs in China, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Ghana, Honduras, India, Kenya, Mongolia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Tibet, and Thailand.

Can I participate in consecutive programs in different locations?

Sure, Global Crossroad is very flexible in considering volunteers' interests, feelings, and goals. However, you must pay your traveling expenses and additional arrangement fees.

How far ahead do I need to register?

We request that volunteers register at least eight weeks before the program starts. This time is required in order to arrange your placement. Volunteers can join this program straight away by paying all program fees, but only if placements are available.

What is the duration of my volunteering?

Your placement date will be counted from the date you join volunteer work, and will end on the date you specified as you signed your contract. Normally we offer a 2-12 weeks volunteer program. However, we offer a year placement to teaching English in China.

How often do you run your programs?

We offer a variety of programs to fulfill the needs of each individual volunteer. All programs run year-round and start 1st and 16th of each month except teaching English in China. This helps us and our affiliated partners to keep the program alive and achieve the goal of volunteers.

Is there an orientation program before program starts?

Once you are fully registered with Global Crossroad, we will send information to you that includes the general information of your placement. After you arrive to the placement, our partner gives you an in-country orientation, which helps you to understand all about your placement and duties.

Do I need to be able to speak a foreign language in order to join the program?

Volunteers on our short-term (2-3 week programs) do not need foreign language skills. On the other hand, those volunteers who are interested in participating on one of our long-term programs are requested to join language program

What is your age policy?

Global Crossroad welcomes people of all ages between 18 and 70 years old, who are capable of working as volunteers. If you are younger than 18 we need letter of permission from your parent.

How can I get a Visa?

We will provide you with information to assist you in obtaining visas to allow you entry into the country of your placement. Check with the country that you will work in, because you may not need a permit to work in that country on tourist visa. However, many of our volunteers choose to enter the country with tourist visas, and all of our local partners say that volunteers have never encountered any problems this way. In addition, you are entirely responsible for ensuring that you have obtained a visa. For more information, please contact the embassy of your assigned country.

Does Global Crossroad provide insurance and liability?

The program fee that you pay to Global Crossroad covers volunteer's insurance. It covers health travel, insurance, and third party insurance. Please click here for more information.

How do I make my payment to Global Crossroad?

Volunteers are requested to pay the registration fee through bank transfers. All payments have to be made at least 8 weeks before your journey in United States dollars. Please note that Global Crossroad does not accept monthly installments. You can download the application form, or ask us for a formal application. Please, complete the application form and deposit a non-refundable US $100 application fee.

What is your refund policy?

  • If you cancel in less than 7 weeks prior to the date of commitment of your placement, we will refund 75 percent of your total program fee, excluding registration and bank charges.
  • If you cancel your placement within less than 5 weeks, we will refund 65 percent of your program fee.
  • If you cancel within less than 3 weeks, we will refund 50 percent of your program fee.
  • If you cancel your placement less than 2 week or after you join the program, no refund will be made. The reason for reducing this scale of refunds set out above is because we need to maintain our relationship with out international partners and we have to mobilize our resources in order to find a replacement.

What types of vaccinations will I need?

It is your responsibility to find out what vaccinations will be appropriate for your destination. You should take all medical advice from your doctor in respect to the country in which you will be doing your volunteer work. In addition, please bring any necessary medication or medical equipment that you may need. Please note that in some cases, you may need to be immunized 2-3 months before you make your expedition.

Safety

International travel presents risks for travelers, especially with the threat of international terrorism. The U.S. State Department has issued travel warnings and advisories in many countries for U.S. travelers. These travel advisories and warnings change frequently as situations in each country change. We suggest that all volunteers consult their own governments before participating in a Global Crossroad program. These links provide travel information:
