Arrival and Departure

To join orphanage volunteer project in India, you will have to fly into Indira Gandi International Airport one day before the start date of the project. Airport pick-up will be arranged.

Contact our local country coordinator as soon as possible if there are any flight contingencies such as missed flights and delays/cancelled flights due to bad weather. Also, Global Crossroad won’t be arranging any airport drop-off service after the completion of its volunteer projects but local staff will be able to help you get the best transportation to the airport.

Visa

You have to obtain a tourist visa in order to work in our orphanage volunteer in India. You can visit the embassy of India or a consulate in your home country to apply and obtain a tourist visa before your flight to India.

Vaccinations

Oral polio, Typhoid, Adult diphtheria, Japanese encephalitis, Tetanus, Hepatitis A, Rabies, Hepatitis B, Meningococcal, Yellow fever (YF), and Varicella are the recommended vaccines for an orphanage volunteering project in India.

How far is the project from the accommodation? How do I commute daily?

You will either be housed on site at the orphanage or within a 10-20-minute walk of your placement, eliminating the necessity of daily transportation.

How many hours a day do we work while volunteering in orphanage abroad in Nepal?

There are always plenty opportunities around the orphanage for you to work additional hours doing things like cleaning, washing, shopping and cooking. On average, working hours are 4-5 hours a day from Mondayto Friday. You will have two free days over the weekend to tour around the country.

The children that you will care for  will most likely become quickly and strongly attached to you. It is important that you remain a positive role model for these children. It is also advised that you do not leave the premises after dusk.

How many orphans are there in a placement? How old are they?

This can vary depending on which orphanage you are assigned. While volunteering overseas in an orphanage in India you'll work with children between the ages of 5 to 16 years. The number of orphans in a placement can vary from 15 to 84.

Is there any other important information that you want to share about this project?

You are expected to be flexible and open minded. The children at the orphanage cannot speak fluent English, so you need to talk to them slowly and try to understand their feelings. The children have different character, so you may ask many questions to gain a better understanding of them.
