Volunteer Responsibilities & Impacts
You will engage in various activities according to your education, skills, experience, and qualifications. When volunteering in healthcare in India, your responsibilities may include:
- Patient vitals: measuring blood pressure, temperature, height, weight, etc.
- Assist doctors and medical staffs in the health centers
- Distributing medicine
- Provide tips to patients regarding health, nutrition and hygiene
- Patient counseling Treatment for minor injuries/wounds
- Patient record keeping
Volunteering in hospitals in India is a very impactful project. Your will not only be able to learn new skills and boost your career but also you will be able to practice with local doctors new procedures and techniques. In addition you will help boost access to health care in impoverished communities and teach local communities simple procedures like first aid and general hygiene that will save lives.
Skills and Qualifications
The healthcare facilities present in India are run by the government. These centers have necessary equipment and quality medical practitioners. You will be needed to assist doctors or complete the tasks assigned by the hospitals/centers.
You must have certification or proof of experience in a medical field, such as a medical student ID, EMT or paramedic certification, or nursing or physician's credentials. Due to the health risks involved, medical volunteers in India who are not properly trained in healthcare cannot support this project
Your understanding of Indian culture and Hindi language can be strengthened by enrolling in the one-week Language & Cultural Immersion program. The knowledge in this program will help you immensely when interacting with patients and their families.
It is important that you are passionate, kind and compassionate while working with sick people in hospitals.
Maximum volunteer age is 65 years.
When you join medical volunteer program in India, your days will be fun and exciting with new experiences. Everyday you will have new opportunities to share your love, skills and passion for sick people and make a positive impact in India.
You will work with different clinics and hospitals in India and each has its own needs, and tasks, there is no fixed daily schedule, just be ready to help at all time in many exciting activities.
- First Day: - On your first day of India medical volunteer opportunity, you will be escorted to the hospital by a local coordinator and introduced to the medical staff you will be working with. During the day you will get to familiarize yourself with the facilities, staff and your duties at the hospital.
- Weekdays: - A typical weekday will be as follows:
- 7.30 AM – Your day will begin with positive energy and a hearty delicious local breakfast shared with your host family.
- 8.30 AM – After breakfast you will set out to leave for the hospital for a day filled with many exciting activities including assisting patients, teaching basic hygiene and administrative work
- 1.30 PM – Lunch is served at noon and you can share a local meal with fellow medical volunteers or you can return back home and have a home cooked Indian lunch.
- 2.00 PM - 4.00 PM – You will finish work around this time, and you have the rest of the day to explore the local community around you.
- 7.00 PM - 9.00 PM– After a long fun day, you will return home for a delicious typical home cooked dinner that will be shared with your host family as you get to learn more about Indian culture and traditions.

Global Crossroad's volunteer program in India application and registration fee cost US $299. The application fee covers the cost of advertising, program promotion, and office expenses (rent, utilities, and staff salaries in USA office).
In addition to the application fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee. You will pay your weekly fee directly to your host family and project. This way, the fees that you pay will benefit those who rightfully deserve them, and not for company profit.

The India volunteer experience program fees will cover expenses that will begin on the first day of the program (usually the first or third Monday of the month) to the last day of the program. If you arrive before the first day of the program or you decide you stay beyond your program’s last day, you will be responsible for the additional expenses, which would typically be around $30 a day for room and meals at a hostel.
Accommodation and Meal
Your accommodation will be very comfortable during your India medical volunteering trip. GCR will provide you with a secure and safe host family to live with throughout your stay. You will be very comfortable as the home offers you modern facilities including cozy bedrooms, ceiling fans and western-style toilets and WIFI. In addition they will serve you three delicious local Indian home cooked meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) per day. Be prepared to enjoy your new home and learn new culture and language.
Free Time and Weekend Exploration
When you join medical volunteering in India, you can be assured that you will have enough time to visit and experience India. You will have plenty of free time every day after work because you will work at the project for only 4 to 5 hours, Monday to Friday. Over the weekend you will have time to travel to the rest of the country exploring cultural and traditional gems.

Medical Volunteering India: FAQs
Arrival and Departure
You have to fly into Indira Gandi International Airport to participate in medical volunteer program in India. It is recommended to fly into India one day before the start date of our volunteer projects. Don’t forget to provide correct flight details to our country coordinator.
You also have to inform them about flight delays and missed/cancelled flights. Doing so will give us time to change our airport pickup time. However, GCR does not provide airport transfer services after the completion of its medical volunteer projects.
A tourist visa is needed to join medical volunteer program in India India. You should apply for a tourist visa at the official embassy or consulate of India in your home country. It is better to apply for a visa one month before your scheduled flight to India because the process is lengthy.
For a medical volunteering trip in India, you need to get vaccinated for diseases like Yellow fever (YF), Adult diphtheria, Japanese encephalitis, Meningococcal, Hepatitis B, Varicella, Rabies, Hepatitis A, Oral polio, Typhoid, and Tetanus.

Where do the volunteers work- hospital or clinics?
While in India, you will either work in hospital or in clinics depending on the availability. In India, Global Crossroad works with a few hospitals. If you are in 4th or 5th year as medical students, or a professional doctors or nurses you can work in more places. Pre-medical volunteers won’t have lot of works to do; they will spend most of their time learning and observing.
