Guatemala is a stunning country having unique cultures, traditions and history traversing hundreds of years. Explore the architecture, and the Mayan heritage, ruins and more when you visit and volunteer in Guatemala!

Sadly, women, especially indigenous women, have long been treated in awful ways by Guatemalan society.

Deprived of a good education, these women lack even basic human rights and are subjected to discrimination, rape, early pregnancy, child marriage, violence, abuse, and control.

Inspire these ladies to rise up and fight back through this Guatemala women empowerment volunteer program. Teach them saleable skills they can use to support themselves, and help them believe in the powerful, independent women they are destined to become.

You will also be helping teach the ladies saleable skills making handicrafts so they can build a business for themselves and become self-sufficient, and free from the abuse and discrimination they have long faced.

Your daily activities in Guatemala women empowerment volunteer program may include:

  • Helping with translations between Spanish and English
  • Teaching women about reproductive health
  • Providing information about legal rights

  • Accompanying women to court trials
  • Creating lesson plans with staff
  • Visiting partner organizations

  • Depending on level of Spanish proficiency, preparing written materials about reproductive and preventative health, women's rights, etc.

Skills and Qualifications

The most important qualification for our Guatemala women empowerment volunteering program is the conviction to help other women in need. Many of the girls and women who benefit from this program are victims of male abusers, and we only accept female volunteers and foster a supportive, sisterhood environment.

You will be working with women from low-income, rural communities who do not speak English, so Spanish conversational skills are required. You’ll need to be 18 and capable of working effectively without supervision. Some other things that will come in handy are a positive attitude, awesome artistic or crafting skills, patience, empathy, and kindness.

Why volunteer with disadvantaged women in Guatemala?

Inspire women to find their own power

Although generations of men in Guatemala have been putting women down, be part of the force that helps them rise up. Inspire these women to become brave, powerful, independent ladies who can make a life for themselves no matter what any man tells them.

Help young girls avoid trauma and pain

Guatemala has some of the highest rates in the world of young pregnancy and sexual violence against girls. You can teach the young girls in the program about their rights and reproductive health, and help them avoid becoming rape victims, teen mothers, and abused by the men in their life who might otherwise hurt and dominate them.

Give women saleable skills and hope for a better future

At our Guatemala women empowerment volunteer opportunity, you’ll be teaching the ladies valuable arts and crafts skills they can use to get jobs or build their own business. Becoming financially solvent is the first step towards independence, and just the help these Guatemalan women need to get on their feet!
