Major FAQ

Where is the Born to Be Wild Lion Project?

This project is located some 25kms inland from the city of Port Elizabeth .

When and where should I arrive?

Volunteers are suggested to arrive on the start date. Generally the volunteers will be collected from the airport, and transferred to the project the day they arrive. If a flight arrives very late at night, it may mean that the volunteer has to overnight in Port Elizabeth , and then transfer out to the project the next day. We organize overnight accommodation (not food) in Port Elizabeth for the volunteer, should this ever happen

How far is the project from Port Elizabeth and how do volunteers get there? Who will take them there?

The project is some 25kms from Port Elizabeth . They will be collected by a project representative, and transferred in the project vehicle.

Do volunteers get orientation before the start of project?

We will have a volunteer co-coordinator at the project, who will oversee the training. Basic training will probably last between 1 and 2 days, and will cover the basic day to day work schedule at the project, the do's and don'ts of project life, and what is expected of volunteers.

What about accommodation? Do volunteers need to bring sleeping bag? Mosquito nets? Anything else?

Volunteers live in volunteer house ( a bunk house made for volunteers). We Suggest volunteers to bring sleeping bags, in case you plan on doing own travels after volunteer experience.

What kinds of food do you offer? Who cooks food?

We offer three foods a day. Volunteers will generally cook for themselves. Breakfast consists of cereal and yogurts, lunches consist of salads, toasted sandwiches, or burgers and dinners consist of mince, chicken, or pasta.

Are there internet, telecommunication, and medical facilities in the project?

Internet facilities are available for emergency purposes at the cost, and time will need to be booked in advance as the computer is the private office in the house. (If a volunteer has their own laptop, they can use the telephone link from the restaurant. Don't forget to bring your converter and charger). Otherwise volunteers will have to use the facilities in town during their time off.

How many hours do volunteers work in project?

Volunteers will work about 8 hours a day, and this will include breaks. Volunteers are expected to work a 7 day week. They will however get two days off every second week, which allows them to spend some time in town, enjoying the many different things on offer .

How much extra money do I need?

Answer to this question depends up on your spending habits. Program basically covers most of expenses of room, food, and transportation. However, we would say an amount of $150 a week to be more than sufficient unless you wish to participate in extra optional tours or excursions that may require more.

Do I need any vaccination and immunization ?

Volunteers can have rabies and anti-tetanus injections should they wish. Many areas have malaria risk or should you travel afterwards so it is best to take something for Malaria. We suggest you to consult your primary care physician or a local travel doctor before you leave the country.

Are there any other requirements?

Dress code for most projects should be natural color clothing. (Rules of each project should be respected)

Wildlife rehabilitation is a sensitive program where Wildlife are encouraged to return to the wild (if possible) therefore contact with animals is sometimes limited unless the animal is injured, orphaned or needing to be nursed

The minimum age restriction is 18, with the maximum age limit being 45. Applicants are expected to be physically able to complete tasks and generally get involved with the rest of the younger group of volunteers

A basic English understanding is required and our programs are open to anyone who has an interest in Africa and wildlife.
