The time period for orientation can vary from one hour to few days, depending on which program and which country you sign up for. During your students' college/university volunteer abroad program orientation, our expert staff will cover topics which are vital for a successful stay, including traditions, cultural differences, religions, language, and societal norms. The content of each topic will depend on the country, but will really help them fit in and feel comfortable. This is where they get their hands dirty! When you sign up for a college/university volunteer vacation, you'll have the chance to decide how long you want their volunteer time to go for. There is usually no compulsory amount of time – we're flexible! After the orientation, your students will start their volunteer work, which is usually 4-6 hours per day, for 5-6 days per week. How they spend the rest of your time is up to them. During the volunteer program, you'll also liaise with the in-country coordinator for guidance, and to address any concerns that might arise.
After all the good work they've done, it's time to relax and soak up the sights of the country. For 2-12 days, you and your students will have the chance to visit beautiful sites of cultural, natural, and historical significance, and take part in a wide range of adventure activities. College/University Volunteer Abroad Safety and Field Support
At Global Crossroad safety of our volunteers is #1 priority. All of our programs are backed with the assurance that no matter what, your team will be safe at all times. We are always double- and triple-checking our projects, locations, and facilities to make sure that you are comfortable and secure. For over a decade, Gloabl Crossroad Volunteers has had a perfect track record when it comes to our volunteers' safety.
Here's how we do it:
1. In-Country Coordinator and Support Staff: The eyes, ears, and heart of the Global Crossroad Volunteers operation is our in-country coordinator and support staff. In every country where we have a project, we have dedicated local staff to help manage and guide volunteer efforts. They know the country inside and out, have lived there for years, and will do everything in their power to make your students' college/university volunteer abroad opportunity perfectly memorable and truly rewarding. Some of their duties include:
- Airport pickup
- Transfer from the airport to your accommodation, and vice-versa
- Introduction to project staff and host family
- Conducting your orientation
- Follow-up visit to your project for guidance or queries, generally weekly
- Advice and help to resolve any concerns or problems you might have during your stay
2. Airport Pickup: From the very moment you land, your students will be in the sure hands of our local support team. We'll have someone waiting for them at arrivals to pick them up and personally transfer them to their accommodation.
3. Orientation: Making your students feel immersed and comfortable in their volunteering destination is important to them and the community they'll be working with, and many countries have rules and codes that might seem alien to your students. That's why each college/university volunteer abroad program will begin with a comprehensive orientation course. These courses cover a broad range of topics – like etiquette, customs, culture, history, and language – that will help your group immensely to understand and participate in life in their new country.
4. Accommodation: We guarantee that accommodation provided will be clean, safe, and comfortable, no matter where your students are staying. We hand-pick and approve all host families and accommodation before we use them in a teen volunteer abroad project, and they have to live up to our very high standards. Host families, especially, have been confirmed to be safe, friendly, and active members of the community, and a majority of them have hosted volunteers before.
5. Insurance and Evacuation Plan: Global Crossroad Volunteers offers comprehensive third-party insurance for everyone undertaking a college/university volunteer abroad vacation. This insurance gives excellent protection in cases of decline in health, accident, or disaster. 6. International Travel Advice: Traveling anywhere, whether for volunteering or for a holiday, requires that you are aware and alert. No matter what country you visit, you'll be subject to their laws, and their culture. We won't ever send you somewhere that's not safe, but it's still a good idea to consult with your country's travel office before you go. Situations may change, and it's wise to keep informed.
For health-related information and information on possible risks while your students are volunteering, visit the Center for Disease Control website. As with all developing countries, the sanitary conditions will probably be poorer than what they're accustomed to. We advise that you do not drink the tap water in these countries.
Once you have arrived in the country, our local team will be happy to help and advise you on any situations where you might feel uncertain. They're experts on the country they live in, and they'll do everything they can to make sure you and your students are safe and happy. We'll provide all contact information for the in-country support staff before you leave.

Your college/university group will typically be managed by a designated group leader, who will be appointed by your school. This will normally be a teacher, parent, or senior student. While they will be organizing the students on a day-to-day basis, the in-country support staff and coordinator will always be there to actively lend a helping hand and guide the project.
All the students for each project will stay close together, and often with multiple students in the same accommodation. The nature of the accommodation depends on preferences, the country, and the project, but it will usually be with host families, a hostel, or a dedicated volunteer house.
Absolutely! At the end of your college/university volunteer abroad trip, your students will embark on an eye-opening tour – organized by us – of many of the country's most beautiful and significant attractions. As well as that, their usual volunteer commitment is 3-5 hours a day, 5-6 days a week. The rest of the time is free for them to explore their surroundings and get up close and personal with local sights.
Included with each college/university volunteering overseas experience is three delicious and healthy meals per day. They'll have the chance to sample local delights and hearty home-cooked fare from their host family, should your students be staying with one. Apart from that, they are free to purchase any meals or food during their spare time.
Global Crossroad Volunteers prides itself on its safety record, and takes each volunteer's safety very seriously. We only send our volunteers to safe and peaceful locations, and select and monitor each project and host family personally. Our in-country staff is on the ground at all times, making sure that they're comfortable and secure.
Of course there is! In fact, we highly recommended that your group picks up at least some of the local language, since it will make their stay and interactions that much more enjoyable. While many groups choose to learn Spanish while in Latin America, there are language opportunities available for every country, and you can slot the lessons into a time that suits them.
