Among
the most destitute in
Sri Lanka, fishermen and
their families live along
the coastline and earn
their living by fishing
in the Indian Ocean. Unfortunately,
the destructive Dec. 26
tsunami swept away their
dreams and brought unbearable
pain and suffering to
countless families along
the coast. Weeks after
the Asian tsunami destroyed
their homes and livelihoods,
thousands of families
along the coast are still
pleading for help and
support. By joining Global
Crossroad’s Tsunami
Reconstruction Project,
you will have a direct
opportunity to share your
compassion and hard work,
giving hope to so many
suffering families along
Sri Lanka’s devastated
coastline
Work Description:
Global
Crossroad’s Tsunami
Reconstrction Project
focuses on the poorest
of Sri Lankan society—its
fishermen—by rebuilding
and renovating homes that
were destroyed or damaged
by the Dec. 26 tsunami.
Volunteers will have the
opportunity to give hope
to these needy families
by working in the villages
of Dadalla, Mahamodera,
and Pettigalawatta.
Volunteers
with construction experience
will be able to use their
skills. Unskilled volunteers
will clear and remove
debris from where the
houses of the village
once stood. This task
involves breaking up and
removing damaged foundations,
and mixing cement, sand,
and gravel. Volunteer
work will also include
lifting the cement blocks
and assisting the masons,
assisting the carpenter(s)
with windows and woodwork,
and keeping the concrete
blocks moist. Volunteers
may also be asked to help
with other reconstruction-related
activities.
