Climbing Kilimanjaro Rongai Route – 7 Days

The Rongai Route is positively the path least populated by those wishing to climb mighty Mount Kilimanjaro . Passing along the northeastern side of Africa's highest mountain, this route careens along the border between Tanzania and Kenya . Offering a unique glimpse into the untainted wilderness found upon the mountainside, this route grant access to Kilimanjaro from the north - an angle not witnessed by many.

 

 

Detailed Itinerary

DAY ONE: Arrive in Arusha   
Arrive in Arusha in preparation to begin the next day's Kilimanjaro climb.

DAY TWO: Arusha - Marangu Gate - Rongai Trail - First Cave Camp
After gaining access via the Marangu Gate, continue onto the Rongai Trail where you will then set out on the first leg of your Kilimanjaro trek with a hike to the village of Nale Moru . Journey through fields of maize and forests of pleasant pines before ending your first day's voyage with an easy ascent to the First Cave Camp at an elevation of approximately 2600 meters.

DAY THREE: First Cave Camp - Third Cave Camp
From the First Cave Camp, continue your ascent towards the volcano of Kibo, via the Second Cave Camp en route to the Third Cave Camp, also known as Kikelewa Caves.

DAY FOUR: Third Cave Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Climb grassy inclines while simultaneously beholding this area's diverse and amazing wildlife. The terrain starts to become somewhat more barren as you approach the Mawenzi campsite where the remainder of the day will be spent acclimating yourself to the rising altitude.

DAY FIVE: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Camp
Continue your Kilimanjaro climb across varying terrain before crossing i nto a region known as "the saddle" (an area situated between Kibo and Mawenzi at an elevation of approximately 4700 meters). Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, make all necessary preparations needed to ensure that the next early morning/late night summit attempt is a successful one.

DAY SIX: Kibo Hut - Uhuru Peak - Horombo Hut 
Awake in the middle of the night (just before midnight), beginning your summit attempt by first ascending to Hans Meyer Cane at an altitude of 5150 meters. After a brief (but much-needed) rest, continue ascending to an elevation of 5680 meters at Gillman's Point where the remainder of the trek leading up to the summit is usually lined with snow-filled paths and extreme temperatures. Finally, climb to an elevation of 5895 meters at Uhuru Peak where you can remain for a short time. Extended periods of time spent at the summit are NOT recommended, so you should begin making your descent as soon as possible. A number of descents (usually done so in six hours total) are required to return to Kibo Hut (three hours) then Horombo Hut where the day's adventure will end.

DAY SEVEN: Horombo Hut - Marangu Gate - Arusha
From Horombo Hut, continue your descent down Mount Kilimanjaro , passing Mandara Hut before ending the day's conquest of the mighty mountain at Marnagu Gate - receiving your respectable accolades. Finally, return to Arusha for the conclusion of your adventure atop Kilimanjaro.

NOTE: in the event that you require additional days during the trek/summit (due to exhaustion/weariness), you are required to pay $200 (per day) to the local operators.
