Overview of the Elderly Home Project
Chiang Mai Elderly Home provides care, shelter, counseling and therapy to poor, helpless, and neglected elderly people above the age of 60. This home is supported by the Department of Social Welfare. A total of 140 elderly citizens (female: 94; male: 46) are currently living in the elderly home which also has a housing complex. There is also an office with about 40 dedicated staff members, who are providing services. Some of the staff members can communicate in English.
These elderly people need help. They have various needs. They should be looked after almost all the time. They need mental and physical support from others. The home needs more helping hands to keep constant eyes on these needy people. Volunteers to Chiang Mai can use their education, skills, and time making meaningful contributions in the life of elderly people in this home and make their life worth living.
Role of a Volunteer
Volunteers will be involved in various activities which are as follows:
- Physiotherapy to needy elderly men and women
- Help in the kitchen (preparing, cooking, serving etc.)
- Entertaining elderly people by singing, creating fun games, etc.
- Skill training activities depending upon your skills
Skills/Qualifications Requirement
Prior experience/knowledge about nursing/care of elderly people will be an advantage. However, volunteers without such experiences are also welcomed as Elderly Home staff will give basic training (1-2 days) on physiotherapy to all volunteers before starting the work. You may bring any photos (family, friends, and home- town), videos, postcards, magazines from home will be useful for your conversation.
Room/Food/Supervision
Global Crossroad manages food and accommodation to volunteers to Chiang Mai. Volunteers can stay either in guest house /hostel. Three meals a day will also be served to the volunteers. Volunteer will be well supervised and they will have 24/7 access to the mobile number of coordinators. Our staffs also visit volunteers in each 1-2 week interval as a part of program.
Location Descriptions
This elderly home is located at the heart of Chiang Mai city. There are more than 300 ancient temples in Chiang Mai. It is the most beautiful city surrounded by hills and mountains, streams, lakes, waterfalls, caves, forests and green fields. Others places of interest include Chiang Mai Zoo, Sankamphheng Industrial Area, Mae Sa Valley, Doi Pui National Park, Tribal Villages, Doi Suthep, Doi Inthanon, etc. Shopping centers, famous night markets, hospitals, Chiang Mai University are in accessible distance.
During weekends and free time, t here are unlimited travel options, impressive Buddhist temples, fantastic scenic views, adventurous rafting, visits to local handicraft outlets, and many more unusual experiences such as buffalo/ elephant ride, trekking, and meeting hill tribes. So go out whenever you are free and enjoy "The Land of Smiles".
A typical day of volunteer in Elderly Home Project :
0700 – 0800 hrs: Breakfast time for elderly people, distribute food and support in kitchen
0800 – 1130 hrs: Time for work/help elderly people; teach, talk, take them around, etc
1130 – 1230 hrs: Lunch time, distribute food and support in the kitchen
1300 - 1600 hrs: Time for work/help elderly people; physiotherapy, teach, talk, take them around and other extra activities
1700 hrs: Elderly start dinner and volunteers can go back to the accommodation
Remarks: This daily itinerary gives the generic picture of daily activities. There can be some changes depending upon the local situation.
