Overview of the Project
Child Development Centers are for pre-school age children. These centers are supported by Tambol (sub-district) administrative authority. Most of the children in these centers come from poor families and local tribes. These centers offer child care services to poor working families who work in the fields or factories.
Most of the students in the outskirts of Chiang Mai do not get the opportunity to learn and speak English. And the teachers themselves do not speak good English. In most of the cases, there are not enough teachers to teach English. There is an urgent need of teachers to help the children to learn conversational English. Thailand volunteers can use their education, skill, and time and make a meaningful contribution for the future of the kids.
Role of a Volunteer
Volunteers to Chiang Mai will be involved in various activities as follows:
• Help the children in games, drawings
• Assist attendants/teachers in taking care of children
• Teach rhymes and basic/simple conversational English
• Help the teachers to practice English
Skills/Qualifications Requirements
There are no specific qualifications as such but baby sitting experience would be an advantage. However, volunteers without such experiences are also welcome. You may bring any photos (family, friends, and home-town), videos, postcards, magazines from home which will be useful for your work and conversation.
Room/Food/Supervision
Global Crossroad manages food and accommodation for the volunteers in Chiang Mai. Volunteers can stay either with the host family or in guest house /hostel. Three meals a day will also be served to the volunteers. Volunteer will be well supervised and they will have 24/7 access to the mobile number of coordinators. Our staffs also visit volunteers in each 1-2 week interval as a part of program.
Location Descriptions
Child Development Centers are located near Chiang Mai city within 1 hour drive. There are more than 300 ancient temples in Chiang Mai. It is the most beautiful city surrounded by hills and mountains, streams, lakes, waterfalls, caves, forests and green fields. Others places of interest include Chiang Mai Zoo, Sankamphheng Industrial Area, Mae Sa Valley, Doi Pui National Park, Tribal Villages, Doi Suthep, Doi Inthanon, etc. Shopping centers, famous night markets, hospitals, Chiang Mai University are in accessible distance.
During weekends and free time, t here are unlimited travel options, impressive Buddhist temples, fantastic scenic views, adventurous rafting, visits to local handicraft outlets, and many more unusual experiences such as buffalo/ elephant ride, trekking, and meeting hill tribes. So go out whenever you are free and enjoy "The Land of Smiles".
A typical day of Chiang Mai volunteer in this Project:
0700 – 0800 hrs: Breakfast and preparation time
0800 – 11:30 hrs: Time for work/help kids, teach English, sing, take them around etc.
1:30 – 12.30 hrs: Lunch time, volunteers can distribute food, monitor the kids, etc.
1300 - 1700 hrs: Time for work/help kids; teach, talk, take them around and other extra activities.
1700 hrs: Kids start dinner and volunteers can go back to their accommodation after dinner
Remarks: This daily itinerary gives the generic picture of daily activities. There can be some changes depending upon the local situation.
