Language and Culture Program in Arusha or Moshi
Language & Culture (1 week-optional): $250
Tanzania 's language and cultural training classes offer glimpses into the Swahili language, as well as Tanzania 's various cultures, religions, and ways of local life prior to beginning volunteers' respective projects. The program covers language training, audio/video presentations, a city tour of Arusha or Moshi.
Day 0: Arrival and transfer to Global Crossroad's contact hostel
Day 1: Meet and greet Global Crossroad in-country staff members; general question/answer sessions (volunteers are GREATLY encouraged to ask questions about their respective programs as well as any inquiries they may have pertaining to room/food, health, safety). ALSO: begin Swahili language program (2-3 hours), and later explore the nearby villages/areas.
Day 2: Language lesson continues (2-3 hours), review of first day's lesson, practice of basic greeting words/phrases, explore local areas/villages in free time. Alternately, you can travel to the city of Arusha and/or Moshi
Day 3: Exploring the city of Arusha and Moshi
Explore the beautiful cities of Arusha and Moshi. Volunteers will explore many religious temples (most notably the mosque near the center of town), Visit the Commonwealth War Cemetery (You can still see the metal pillar which was used for hanging the unfortunate), trek to several smaller communities outside of the main town of Moshi.
Day 4: Language lesson continues (2-3 hours): review and practice basic words, language practice, lecture by Global Crossroad's Tanzania Director about program, history, culture, religion etc.; short cultural program as well as travel to nearby beaches.
Day 5: Language lesson continues (2-3 hours), review of first day's lesson, practice of basic greeting words/phrases, explore local areas/villages in free time. Alternately, you can travel to the city of Arusha and/or Moshi
Day 6: Language lesson continues (2-3 hours), review of first day's lesson, practice of basic greeting words/phrases, explore local areas/villages in free time. Alternately, you can travel to the city of Arusha and/or Moshi
Day 7: Closing of language/cultural immersion program; evaluation of language program; departure for respective projects; introduction to respective projects' staff members, host families, and beginning of respective programs.
