Summer Escape: July 2 - July 29, 2008

Tibet , also known as "Shangri-La" and "the roof of the world," is an awesome land rich in wonderful people and an amazing culture. For four weeks, join Global Crossroad's Seasonal Escape in Tibet - making a rugged Himalayan adventure in this mysterious and intriguing land, trekking through stunning landscapes, hidden valleys, all among a backdrop of flowering grasslands, majestic monasteries, Buddhist stupas and Himalayan plateaus. During this short but enriching period, travelers are introduced to the amazingly diverse culture, language, and religion; all while traveling on the historic, centuries-old caravan trails, assisting the fascinating and rural people of Tibet.

Orientation in Lhasa (Day 1)

Begin your Tibetan language classes in the cultural capital of

Lhasa. This uniquely designed extensive language and cultural course offers you glimpses of the amazing country, fosters cultural intimacy, and prepares you to explore Tibet and enjoy one of the most mysterious regions of the world. Our language and cultural course combines language training, lectures on Tibetan culture, history, religions, and other issues. In free time, hike in the rural villages and local bazaars, and visit some of the cultural wonders of Tibet including Potala Palace, Sara Buddhist monastery, and the thriving Lhasa bazaar.

Activities: Briefings on local culture, history, customs, politics, geography, health issues, and challenges of Tibet

Work in an Orphanage (Days 2-20)

For the next 19 days, work in an orphanage - teaching English to orphans; organizing creative, extra-curricular activities (singing, playing, drawing, and dancing). You can also participate in the orphan's education by helping in the Tibetan Art Center as well as learn some things yourself in the Tibetan Medicine Center , and Tibetan Handicraft Centers . On the weekends, explore beautiful Namasto Lake and stay overnight in a tent. Also, explore the town of Shal (small Tibetan village 45 km out of Lhasa ) and experience the truly rural Tibetan life.

Activities: work with children, work in the orphanage, teach English to Tibetan children, hike in the village, visit Namasto Lake and visit rural Tibetan villages.

Tibet Overland Tours (7 days)

Take an overland journey of spectacular Tibet , where the majority of the land rests above 4000 meters (13,000 feet). The surrounding Himalayas are awe-inspiring and tempting, as well as the Tibetan plateaus. Tibet is a place for the rugged adventurer as well as the spiritual wanderer. Traveling in Tibet is beyond the average trip and is surely the experience of a lifetime.

Activities: seven (7) days consisting of trekking this world-famous region while experiencing the many breathtaking sights of the amazing Himalayan mountain ranges and villages of Tibet.

Program itineraries are merely samples and may change to meet the needs of the volunteers and changes in the field conditions. This itinerary will be finalized upon arrival in Lhasa .
