Volunteer Sri Lanka
Teaching English

Rich in natural beauty and ageless culture but economically and educationally disadvantaged, Sri Lanka is striving to become an easily accessible nirvana for international travelers. Sri Lankans are a hopeful people who are working toward a more prosperous life, and the English language is an important gateway to their dream. Learning English is one way the Sri Lankans are able to increase their literacy and ensure their participation in ever-changing technological advances.

Teaching English in Sri Lanka is challenging but rewarding. In collaboration with local schools, volunteers in the Sri Lanka project will teach English in Embilipitiya—a rural village 180 km from the capital city of Sri Lanka whose people want to help their children improve their future job outlook by increasing their knowledge of English.

Our local partners have established English schools in rural areas of Sri Lanka to help provide this service for children ages 2½ to 6. Teaching these children can be enjoyable and rewarding. Our volunteers use a variety of teaching techniques such gestures, flash cards, artwork, music, and songs. If you have specialized experience, you might also be asked to teach mathematics or physical education. To be a proficient instructor, prior experience teaching English is helpful. However, if you are not entirely confident in your teaching abilities, Global Crossroad can place you as an assistant teacher.
