Overview of the Project
Rich in natural beauty and ageless in culture, Sir Lanka is economically and educationally disadvantaged and is constantly striving to become an easily accessible nirvana for international travelers. Sri Lankans are a hopeful people who are working towards a more prosperous life, and see the English language as an important gateway to their dream. Learning English is one such way for the Sri Lankans to increase their literacy and ensure their participation in the ever-changing technological advances.
Our local partners have established English schools in Galle as well as around the rural areas of Sri Lanka to help provide this service to children age 6-16. Teaching these children can be very enjoyable and rewarding, but most of the orphan centers have very limited resources and are drastically understaffed. Furthermore, the schools need good teachers to teach good English to the students.
Role of a Volunteer
Depending on the interest of the volunteers, they can teach English, Math, Science, or Physical education as well as the following daily activities:
Teach conversational English, Math, or Science to students between the ages of 6 -16 in different standards
Use gestures, flash cards, artwork, music and songs to motivate the children in their learning
Interact with the students in English
Help the school administration (depending on need)
Skills/Qualifications Requirements There are no specific qualifications for teaching volunteers in Sri Lanka except fluency in English. Prior experience in teaching English is helpful. However, if you are not entirely confident in your teaching abilities, Global Crossroad can place you as an assistant teacher.
Room/Food/Supervision
Global Crossroad manages room/food for volunteers. Volunteers live with the host family/ hostel/t em ple as wellas manage a separate room and local meals three (3) times a day. Sometimes the food is arranged through self catering.
Volunteers will also have 24/7 access to our office in Sri Lanka as well as the mobile numbers of our coordinators. Our staff members also visit the volunteers in each 1-2 week interval as a part of the program.
Location Descriptions

The Galle Fort is a world heritage site and it still r em ains the largest fortress in Asia built by European invaders.
During their free time, volunteers can explore the beautiful beaches of Sri lanka or visit various Buddhist and Hindu t em ples, as well as mosques, churches, parks, zoos, national parks, museums and art galleries. There are also many beautiful villages on the north side of Galle where volunteers can explore Sri Lankan villages. Volunteers will have access to internet cafés in Galle .
