Teaching
English for disadvantaged children or working
for destitute, physically challenged, HIV/AIDS-infected
kids
Though India surpassed
its development goals, poverty remains a
serious problem affecting children of poor
families in rural areas. Luckily, efforts
have been made by a variety of welfare and
social organizations to protect these children
by giving them a safe and secure home environment
and, most importantly, educational and professional
skills. As a volunteer, you will share your
time, energy, and skills to support these
children and offer them encouragement and
hope.
Children in this project
are socially and economically backward,
disadvantaged, abandoned, destitute, physically
challenged, and HIV/AIDS-infected. Some
are children who attend ordinary schools,
special schools, residential schools, and
rehabilitation centers. Most of the projects
are live-and-work situations where volunteers
primarily help younger age groups and toddlers
by teaching, learning, training, playing,
and living together.
As volunteers you will
be expected to teach basic English and other
subjects and activities including drawing,
organizing games, singing, dancing, theater,
and sports activities to students ages 6
to 16 in both private schools and NGO-organized
education centers. Volunteers are usually
provided with a fixed-curriculum English
book and supported by local English teachers.
If you have abilities in computers, art,
music, sports, and professional skills,
you may also be asked to teach these.
