Volunteers in any of the above projects are involved in various activities such as reading stories, helping the children with their gardens, caring for and playing with the children. You will also be teaching basic conversational English and helping with homework. Volunteers support recreational and artistic activities with the objective of educational learning and, also have fun with the children organizing and developing sports activities. You will help in the kitchen to serve lunch in the dining room and also assist with location-specific duties: routine maintenance, construction, etc.
The Street Children Project in South Africa also operates life skills courses, performing arts, career development, leadership training, and entrepreneurial skills. It runs a Day Care Centre providing education and a vegetable garden as an income source as well and, volunteers’ help and support are expected in every aspect of this project
Skills/Qualifications Requirements
Volunteers do not require any special skills or qualifications because the project staff will provide all the necessary orientation and training to effectively carry out volunteer activities. However, volunteers should be passionate about caring for others and very understanding to the often adverse situations of these children
Room/Food/Supervision
Most of our volunteers live in a homestay with local host families and they are provided a private room and three meals. The family and volunteers share use of the bathroom and kitchen facilities and you might also have another volunteer living with you. This also provides a local support network beyond the volunteers and program staff. A lot of the volunteers consider their home stay a vital component of their South African experience.
