Volunteer in South Africa
Disabled Children/ Special Education/ Old Age
Care Project

Volunteer Safari South Africa

Overview of the Project

If you are patient, loving, kindhearted, and love helping others then this is the perfect project for you! The disabled/special education children of South Africa need help in raising their comprehension levels and the senior citizens require assistance with some of the daily fitness activities. Our local partners can always use help teaching students, and the seniors in Rusthof Old Age home always enjoy a new smile supporting them with their stretches. Volunteers can appreciate the fulfillment they feel when helping these disadvantaged children and seniors.

Location: Cape Town
Project: Disabled Children
Arrival dates: 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month
Arrival and Departure: Cape Town International Airport
Language Requirement: None
Room and Board: Host family and local food three times a day
Work Hours: 25-35 hours per week

Role of a Volunteer

Volunteers will assist teachers and students in the learning process and some tasks include teaching the special education students and helping them with therapy. Aside from teaching volunteers may also help take care of all the disabled children and everything included in that. The seniors will also need the most help with their physical stimulation. Volunteers help stretch and walk with the seniors while monitoring progress and supervising activities.

Skills/Qualifications Requirements

There are no special qualifications or skills necessary for this but volunteers should be highly patient and flexible for this project. The of the tasks involved with teaching or caring for the disabled are not always easy or fast, but they are also much more rewarding.

Room/Food/Supervision

Most of our volunteers live in a homestay with local host families and they are provided a private room and three meals. The family and volunteers share use of the bathroom and kitchen facilities and you might also have another volunteer living with you. This also provides a local support network beyond the volunteers and program staff. A lot of the volunteers consider their home stay a vital component of their South African experience.
