Kathmandu has seen a speedy growth in vehicles in conjunction with the increase in population and urban mobilization, which has resulted in high traffic volumes. In turn, this has increased the number of road accidents. The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division is constantly striving to achieve safety on the roads. But that can be achieved only through public cooperation and goodwill. So, Our partner would like to assist to managing the traffic disturbances by mobilizing international volunteers. It is challenging but equally interesting too. The first vehicle was imported in Kathmandu in B.S. 1958 and the traffic control measures were initially implemented in B.S. 2007
Your role as a volunteer
Primarily, traffic police in Nepal should prevent and reduce road accident by enforcing the effective traffic regulations. They help to develop a sense of responsiveness and sensitivity to the needs of the public and develop the human resource of traffic police, as well as assist and advise various agencies for smooth and safe flow of traffic. They also encourage participation and involvement of public in traffic management.
As a volunteer, you will be assisting traffic police on the street managing the traffic crowd. It is also very important to make people aware of the traffic signals. Rules in Nepal are not followed very strictly so sometimes you may have difficulty controlling people but, we request volunteers to be supportive to the traffic police. People in our country have very low traffic awareness so we also request volunteers to provide awareness programs on the spot. You can join some weekend programs organized by traffic offices if they are available. We arrange 2-3 days of traffic management before the start of the program
Skills/Qualification Required
There is no need of specific qualification to join this project in Nepal . However, volunteers interested in this project must have courage to deal with Nepalese Police as well as the public. Volunteers should have: a desire to help the people of Nepal , flexibility, self-motivation, openness to a new culture and a willingness to learn something new. Volunteers from any nationality are acceptable but must be a minimum 18 years old. Volunteers for this project must join 10 days training program followed by 7 days Nepali Language course and 3 days training by Police officers in the Traffic Police Office. After this short training, volunteers are requested to work in the field with other traffic police.
We require 3 people in minimum and 10 in maximum and these people can be mobilized in the field together in different places mentioned above. So, if we do not get 3 volunteers, you will be working in orphanage
Program Starting date
This traffic volunteering program in Nepal is available around the year and program starting date is the first and third Monday of each month.
Project Location
Traffic support projects are located in Kathmandu and really close to our office. At present we have selected three places, Kalanki, Kalimati and Balkhu, to mobilize volunteers. Kathmandu is a vibrant capital city of Nepal with places of great tourist attractions like Thamel, Patan, Swaymbhu, etc. Kathmandu has a wide range of restaurants, internet cafés, clubs, shopping centers, and banks. The volunteers also have numerous opportunities to explore the sites under cultural heritage during free time. Our volunteers can simply hike in near by villages, ride bikes in Kathmandu, walk around the tourist city of Thamel , the options are really unlimited.
Food and Accommodation
Host Family:
Staying with a host family gives volunteers a better opportunity to learn about our culture and way of life. Volunteers will have a separate room in the host family but share the facilities with the family members. To minimize the language barrier, we have selected our host family with a member can at least speak some English. It will be challenging but will give volunteers more fruitful experience. For your convenience, you can always find our representative in close contact whenever needed. The family will provide you two Nepali meals in morning and evening and tea and biscuits as breakfast and snacks.
Hostel:
we arranges room, food, and supervision for volunteers from the beginning to the end of program. During the first week of the language and cultural program, you will stay in our hostel in Katmandu . Our hostel in Katmandu is located in the heart of the city giving volunteers easy access to all Katmandu has to offer. In the hostel, we have two experienced cooks who will make Nepali food (similar to Indian foods and includes wheat bread, rice, curry, lentils, Chapatti, and Pickled vegetables) for you. We are happy to host volunteers for their entire volunteering period in our hostel too. Here you will have breakfast in the morning, lunch at 12 and dinner at 7 pm.
