Global Crossroad Starts HOME BASE In Nepal

More Home Base Photos

Safety of volunteers is our first concern –

With a philosophy of upgrading our program's quality and features, Global Crossroad recently introduced a HOME BASE in Nepal . Our home-base accommodations in Nepal offer volunteers a wonderful place to rest and relax after a hard day's work or weekend travel. These accommodations are safe and are situated within a compound that will accommodate all your daily needs including meals, transportation, sleeping arrangements, etc. This is the ideal setting for individuals looking for a “home away from home” as well as the perfect arrangement for sharing your daily experiences with fellow volunteers from around the world, maintaining your privacy and personal safety and being able to seek the advice and assistance of our local coordinator at anytime.

Location

In Nepal, our home base is located in Kalanki, beautiful residential area of western side of Kathmandu, which is about 30 minutes drive from the international airport in Kathmandu . Our home base is very safe, clean, and accessible to local bus station and small supermarkets where you can find goods for your daily needs.  There is a 24hrs internet facility in our home base as well. This is a residential area with many business families, high ranked government officials and people with the high social status.  The nearby local bus station is only 5 minutes walk from the home base. The downtown, Thamel, is about 30 minutes drive from the base and bus or tuk-tuk is less than a dollar. To take a taxi downtown is about $5.

Our Home Base

Global Crossroad has rented a beautiful 4-story house (neatly 5000 square foot) located in the middle village. When selecting this house, we primarily focused on the safety and comfort of the volunteers. Our goal was to develop a home which can serve as “a home away from your home” The house is secured (with Iron gate), has 6 bedrooms, a living room, big back yard, western style bath/restroom facilities, kitchen, TV, and hot water facilities.  Each room has 2-3 beds so volunteers will be sharing room with one another.  GC coordinator and his wife (our language teacher) also live in the facility to provide for our volunteers in the case of an emergency.

We offer an experienced cook to provide local meals 3 times a day. Volunteers are free to make tea and coffee (24 hours) for themselves.  Typically, volunteers eat breakfast and dinner at the home base and take lunch packet for the lunch. We offer fresh, nutritious, clean local foods to our volunteers. We also work extremely hard to maintain our facilities.

Life in Home Base (Just sample)

Mostly volunteers wake up at 6-7 AM in the morning. Breakfast is served around 7-8 AM. After breakfast, catch a bus and travel to your project site. Our country coordinator will explain you the route. Please listen carefully and strictly follow what he advises you. Depending on the location of the project and traffic condition, it will take roughly 15- 45 minutes (one way) to travel to the project each day. The cost of travel is around $1-2 per day. Alternatively, you can take a taxi but it would be expensive ($10-$15 per day). However, we do advice you to avoid over crowded buses and remain wary of pick pocketing. Once you return from your day's work, you can relax with a cup of tea or coffee. In the evening, you can unwind by watching TV from a comfortable sofa, read a book, explore Kathmandu or spend time talking with other volunteers.
