Overview of Health Project
Nepal is one of the poorest countries of the world. Like the other basic infrastructure of the country, the government has not been able to provide the basic means of health facilities to its people. Still an overwhelming number of Nepalese never receive proper health care. Most of the Nepalese cannot afford to visit doctors as the doctor fee is highly expensive to these poor people. And on top of everything, most of the doctors are stationed in the hospitals of Kathmandu and running their own clinics in posh areas depriving the simple and poor rural villagers deprived of any medical attention. The state run heath centers also lack medical resources.
This health project benefits hundreds and thousands of people who have never had the opportunity to receive proper health care. This project of Global Crossroad is an endeavor to reach the needy and disadvantaged people in Nepal .
Many Nepalese are still deprived of health care benefits. The situation in rural areas is even worst in the absence of doctors and other medical staffs. The state run health centers established to provide health care to the villagers are very poor in resources and also under staffed. Qualified volunteers are needed to reach these needy people and address their problems.
Role of Volunteer
Volunteers will engage themselves in the health placements by assisting local doctors, nurses, and other medical staffs. Volunteers will also assist in the treatment of patients.
Assist doctors, nurses and medical staffs
Examine and treat the patients
Treat minor injuries
Volunteers can also participate in hospital programs like record keeping
Educate patients on the importance of sanitation, nutrition, etc.
Skills/Qualifications Needed
Interested volunteers must have certification or proof of experience in a medical field, such as a medical student ID, EMT or paramedic certification, or nursing or physician's credentials. Due to the health risks involved, volunteers who are not properly trained in health care cannot work in this project.
Room/Food/Supervision
Global Crossroad manages room/food for volunteer. In most of the cases, volunteer stay with host family where we manage a separate room and Nepali food three times a day.
Global Crossroad maintains 3 local staffs, office, vehicle, and own hostel in Kathmandu . Most of our projects are located within 10 miles periphery of our office in Kathmandu enabling us to meet our volunteers frequently and whenever needed. We also have field staffs in Chitwan to supervisor and meet volunteers. Volunteer will also have 24/7 access to our office and mobile number of our coordinators. Moreover, head of the conservation project serves as a local contact person for volunteers. Our staffs also visit volunteers in each 1-2 week interval as a part of the program.
Location Descriptions
The health projects are located in the outside area of Kathmandu (within 10 miles). Kathmandu is a vibrant capital city of Nepal with places of great tourist attractions like Thamel, Patan, Swaymbhu, etc. Kathmandu has a wide range of restaurants, internet cafés, clubs, shopping centers, and banks. The volunteers also have numerous opportunities to explore the sites under cultural heritage during free time. Our volunteers can simply hike in near by villages, ride bikes in Kathmandu, walk around the tourist city of Thamel , the options are unlimited.
Some health projects are located in Chitwan as well. Chitwan is about 3 hours drive away from Kathmandu (185kms).
