| Overview
of the Project
More
than 10,000 children live or work on the
streets of Morocco. Some of these children
have no family homes. With only themselves
to rely upon, these marginalized children
have become incapable of developing the
skills necessary for social and economic
integration. A large portion of these children
(especially victims of sexual assault as
well as those addicted to various forms
of drugs) have developed a sense of abandonment
with respect to their bodies – often
leading to bodily neglect and a fear of
human contact with extreme cases resulting
in self-mutilation. The Street Children
Project in Morocco works in the fields of
familial, educational and socio-professional
reintegration for children in difficult
circumstances. Its daily work is principally
based in the disadvantaged area of Sidi
Bernoussi and concentrates on the sites
frequented by the children (bus station,
harbors and town centers). This program
also implements multidisciplinary programs,
including socio-recreational workshops such
as drama and painting.
Role of Volunteers
This project works with
a multidisciplinary team including educators,
social workers, psychologists, teachers,
artists and students. This program sets
up original and specific programs for social
reintegration of disadvantaged and vulnerable
children, including parental education,
individualized pedagogy workshops and adapted
professional training. This project has
a participatory approach to its work with
an aim of creating a real partnership based
around the children’s needs. Therefore,
volunteers will be involved in a variety
of duties. Some of activities/duties include:
- Teaching English (in informal and formal
classroom settings)
- Assisting the children with their daily
schoolwork
- Assisting in music lessons, fine arts
lessons, drama lessons, etc.
- Organizing games and extra-curricular
activities.
- Helping in administrative duties and
other programs within the project
- Participating in maintaining the house
(cleaning, repairs) along with local staff
members.
- Organizing extra-curricular, leisure-time
activities.
- Other various duties according to participants’
interest – support and care for
the children in the center with the possibility
of outreach work.
Skills and Qualifications
No skills or qualifications
are required to work in this particular
project. However, volunteers are expected
to be flexible, responsible, patient, mature,
and motivated. Most importantly, participants
should have a passion for helping children.
Also: knowledge of the French language is
helpful.
Room/Food/Supervision
Global Crossroad manages
food and accommodations for volunteers in
Morocco. Volunteers can stay either with
a host family or in a hostel. Three (3)
meals a day will also be served to the volunteers.
Volunteers will be trained and regularly
supervised and will have 24/7 access our
local partnering coordinators. Local, project
staff members will also regularly work with
volunteers as part of the program.
