Work in Girls Orphanage

Overview of the Project

Offering safe home and education can be a great breakthrough in life of underprivileged children who had gone through a violent and traumatic life. In Guadalajara , Mexico , few organizations are working to give a new life for abused girls and orphans. The main objective of these orphanages is to provide a shelter, homely environment, education, and skill training to the girls who had been physically and psychologically abused in their past. These girls stay in the orphanage until they can come back to their families or find a new family for adoption or able to stand in their own foots. The age of girls range from 14-18.

These orphanages are short of staffs. The resources are also in a very poor condition. Volunteers are greatly needed to teach English and guide the children, and help them to follow and see the positive side of life as it is very difficult for these children to come out of their traumatic past. The orphanage needs volunteers to keep the children occupied into something constructive.

Role of a Volunteer

The role of the volunteers will be assessed by the supervisor. The type of work also depends on the volunteer's willingness, interest, and capabilities. However, volunteers mostly involve in the following activities:

•  Teaching English
•  Teaching other subjects (math, science)
•  Help in group therapy
•  Help the children with their homework
•  Help the orphanage staff with computers and other activities
•  Organize game, painting, drawing or other creative activities for kids.
•  Involve in other activities of the orphanage

Skills/Qualifications Needed

There is no specific need of skills/qualification to join this program. However, volunteers working in orphanage must be interested to work for girl orphans. Projects mostly welcome the female volunteers. Male volunteers are also accepted but are requested to be careful as girls are of diverse background.

Room/Food/Supervision

Global Crossroad manages room and food - three meals a day. Volunteers will stay with host families in Guadalajara , where they will also have the opportunity to experience the real Mexican culture. You can also practice your Spanish language with host family. Volunteer will also have access to the mobile number of our coordinators. Our staffs also visit volunteers in each 1-2 week interval as a part of the program.

Location Descriptions

The projects and host family are mostly located in the city areas with easy access to internet, telephones, banks, etc. Volunteers can involve themselves in various activities during their free time (from mariachi bars to the tequila express train, or join local festivities, live bands, theater, and movies).
