| Overview of the Project
The English language is in high d em and anywhere in the world and Mexico is definitely no exception. Many students desire to learn and improve their English skills. Knowledge of English is a great pride amongst many Mexicans and it is almost like a next-to-impossible dream to the children who go to local and public schools as their parents cannot afford to send th em to boarding and private schools.
Most of the schools in Mexico are resource poor, and understaffed. The schools are in ardent need of good teachers who can teach English to the students as well as assist the teachers in their English teaching.
Role of a Volunteer
Depending upon the experience, knowledge and interest of the volunteers, they can be engaged in the following activities:
Teach conversational English, Math, Science to students primary and junior secondary levels
Read literature and improve the low comprehension level and poor pronunciation of students
Provide theoretical and practical assistance and aide the teachers
Interact with the students and boost their confidence in English conversation
Skills/Qualifications Needed
There is no specific qualification for teaching project in Mexico except fluency in English and love for the children.
Room/Food/Supervision
Global Crossroad manages room and food - three meals a day. Volunteers will stay with host families in Guadalajara , where they will also have the opportunity to experience the real Mexican culture. You can also practice your Spanish language with host family. Volunteer will also have access to the mobile number of our coordinators. Our staffs also visit volunteers in each 1-2 week interval as a part of the program.
Location Descriptions
Guadalajara with the metropolitan area has about 10 million inhabitants. It is the second largest and most vibrant city of Mexico . The projects and host family are mostly located in the city areas with easy access to internet, telephones, banks, etc. Volunteers can involve th em selves in various activities during their free time (from mariachi bars to the tequila express train, or join local festivities, live bands, theater, and movies).
In free time, volunteer can explore major tourist attractions such as Palacio del Gobierno, the Instituto Cultural Cabañas, the bustling Mercado Libertad, Zona Minerva, Zapopan , Tlaquepaque arts and crafts, Tonalá.
A typical day of a Volunteer in English Teaching Project
7 AM - 8 AM: Breakfast
Morning: Go to school and teach the students English, math, science
12 PM - 1PM: Lunch break
Afternoon: Help other teachers in school and arrange extra curricular activities like games in the school. Assist the students in their class-work and homework
Evening: Free time
