Global Crossroad Starts HOME BASE In Kenya

More Home Base Photos

Safety of volunteers is our first concern –

With a philosophy of upgrading our program’s quality and features, Global Crossroad recently introduced a HOME BASE in Kenya. Our home-base accommodations in Kenya offer volunteers a wonderful place to rest and relax after a hard day’s work or weekend travel. These accommodations are safe and are situated within a compound that will accommodate all your daily needs including meals, transportation, sleeping arrangements, etc. This is the ideal setting for individuals looking for a “home away from home” as well as the perfect arrangement for sharing your daily experiences with fellow volunteers from around the world, maintaining your privacy and personal safety and being able to seek the advice and assistance of our local coordinator at anytime.

Features of Nairobi Homebase

  • Large safe compounded 6 bedroom two storey home in rich and beautiful area of suburban Nairobi
  • Living with many international volunteers
  • Amenities: TV, Telephone, Free coffee, hot/cold showers, and spacious room
  • Large back yard, garden, and enough area/spaces to relax and read
  • Arrangement of daily food, room, and daily transportation to project
  • 24/7 supervision of country coordinators

Location

Our home base is located in a beautiful area nearly 20 km from the Kenya International airport. The villages are very safe (guarded by security guard), clean, and accessible to local the bus station. In the village, you can see beautiful British style houses which belong to rich families of Kenya. Many business families, high ranked government officials and people with high social status live in this village. The nearby local bus (matatu) station is only one km away from the village (so you can easily walk to the local bus station if you want to go to Nairobi. The downtown Nairobi is approximately 15 km from this village and matatu fee is roughly $1. The nearby internet café, restaurant, and police station and supermarket are just 2 km away from village.

Our home Base

Global Crossroad has rented a beautiful house (neatly 5000 square foot) located in the middle village. When selecting this house, we primarily focused on the safety and comfort of the volunteers. Our goal was to develop a home which can serve as “a home away from your home” The house is secured (with Iron gate), has 5 bedrooms, a living room, big back yard, western style bath/restroom facilities, kitchen, TV, and hot water facilities. Each room has 2-3 beds so volunteers will be sharing room with one another. GC coordinator and his wife (our language teacher) also live in the facility to provide for our volunteers in the case of an emergency.

We offer an experienced cook to provide local meals 3 times a day. Volunteers are free to make tea and coffee (24 hours) for themselves. Typically, volunteers eat breakfast and dinner at the home base and take lunch packet for the lunch. We offer fresh, nutritious, clean local foods to our volunteers. We also work extremely hard to maintain our facilities.

Life in Home Base (Just sample)

Mostly volunteers wake up at 6-7 am in the morning. Breakfast is served around 7-8 am. After breakfast, catch a bus (called Matatu locally) from a local bus station and travel to the project site. Depending on the location of the project and the traffic condition, it takes roughly 15 to 45 minutes to travel (one way) each day. The cost of travel is around $1-2 per day. Alternatively, you can take a taxi but it would be expensive ($10-$15 per day). Volunteers should not worry about travelling in a local bus. Kenyan people are friendly and most of our volunteers have enjoyed the experience. However, we do advice you to avoid over crowded buses and remain wary of pick pocketing. Once you return from your day's work, you can relax with a cup of tea or coffee. In the evening, you can unwind by watching TV from a comfortable sofa, read a book in the backyard, explore the village or talk with other volunteers.
