Where is this project located?
This project is located in Tengeru village at Mt Meru and Kilimanjaro region in Tanzania .
Tengeru village is located at the slopes of Mt Meru, amidst the small plantations of coffee and tropical fruits. It also has a vast rain forest at the Mt Meru slopes including some small lakes like Lake Duluti . It is only 10 kilometres away from the Arusha town.
Due to the mountainous location there is green thick vegetation and the nights are colder.
What should I remember to bring?
Almost throughout the year, the daytime is tropical hot but between June and August, the nights are cold. It rains from March to May, and sometimes during the months of December. The rain in these areas is not that harmful. The volunteers are requested to bring light summer clothes and some warm clothing for the evening and night hours including the following items:
Working Gloves
Working Boot
Sleeping Bag
Sun Block
Toiletries
Seasonal Clothing
Footwear (flip-flops, sandals, shoes)
Basic First Aid Kit
Torch (during power cuts)
Malaria Preventives (can be purchased for a cheaper price in Tanzania and the local country agent will help you on that)
Visas
The citizens of US and other countries can get visa at the airport upon arrival paying $50 for a 3-months visa. However, Global Crossroad highly recommends the volunteers to get tourist visa from the Tanzanian Embassy or the Consulate office in their home country.
Work Hours
Working hours are usually about 6 hours each day, 6 days a week. Working hours may vary with the change in the climatic conditions. Volunteers mostly work between
9am-12 noon and 3-5 pm. In free time, volunteers can teach in local schools and explore local villages and rural life.
Health
There is some malaria, specifically if the volunteers travel to the coastal areas. Most volunteers choose to take preventative medication. Many foreigners also choose to be inoculated against tetanus and typhoid, Hepatitis A, and meningococcal meningitis.
Clothing
For daytime, light tropical summer clothing and some warm clothes for the night.
Arrival and Departure
Volunteers are expected to arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport at least one day before the start of the project. Please let us know your flight number and the date and time of your arrival so that we can receive you at the airport. Volunteers will be responsible for their own expenses if they arrive more than 1 day before the start of the program (full board $ 15 per day).
