April, May and June, these are the hottest months in India . It is quite humid between July and September though the temperature drops as it is also the monsoon season. The weather is pleasant during October, November and December. The cold weather comes in between January and March. So, the volunteers are requested to prepare themselves accordingly. It is also suggested to bring the following items :
Working gloves
Working boot
Mosquito net
First aid kit
Sleeping bag
Sun block (sun can be very intense in India )
Toiletries
Seasonal clothing
Footwear (flip-flops, sandals, shoes)
Torch (frequent power cuts takes place in the project location)
2 passport size photos
Visas
US and many western citizens can get visas at the airport upon arrival but this could be a hassling and grueling process at times so all the volunteers are strictly requested/recommended to apply for their visas in the Indian Embassies/Consulates in their respective countries. Indian visa with six months validity (multiple entries) will cost
US $60.
Work Hours
Working hours are usually about 6 hours a day, 6 days a week. Working hours may vary with the change in climatic conditions. Volunteers mostly work between 9am-12 am and 3-5 pm. During free time, volunteers can play with the children and organize fun activities or stroll around the village.
Health
Volunteers from US, Canada , or the UK do not need vaccination certificate or inoculations to enter India but the recommended vaccinations are for hepatitis and typhoid fever. You are also advised to carry diarrhea medication, antibacterial skin cleansers, adhesive bandages, and water purification kit/tablet. We strongly suggest you to take the advice of medical doctor before leaving for India .
Clothing
Your clothing should be time and place appropriate. Local people in India dress modestly, and you should do the same to avoid offence. Generally, women should not wear shorts, short skirts (cover your knees!) or sleeveless tops outside tourist areas, and nudity is not acceptable anywhere.
Arrival and Departure
Volunteers are expected to arrive at Indira Gandhi International Airport at least one day before the project starts. Please let us know your flight number and the date and time of your arrival so that we can come and receive you at the airport. Volunteers will bear their own expenses if they arrive more than one day earlier to the project commencement.
Local Support
Throughout the project period volunteers will be lead/supported or supervised by 1-2 local leaders. Local leaders will stay with volunteers for 24/7.
