Global Crossroad’s
Spanish language class orients
volunteers to Spanish language,
culture, and ways of life before
the start of each volunteering
project. Our Spanish language
project is comprised of language
teaching, travel in your free
time, and a stay with a host
family. Language lessons are
tailored to the Spanish level
of each student. Volunteers
begin their service projects
with confidence after participating
in our Spanish language and
cultural orientation program.
Global Crossroad’s Spanish
language program is conducted
in La Ceiba, a city surrounded
by a variety of tourist activities,
including whitewater rafting,
scuba diving, hiking, mountains,
and, of course, the sparkling
blue ocean.
How does
the Spanish language program
work?
On the first day of classes,
students have an hour-long orientation
session, followed by a placement
test and an oral interview with
their teacher. We then place
you in the appropriate class
level based on your language
skill. Your instruction always
begins with a one-on-one lesson
which focuses on grammar, reading,
writing, conversation practice,
and the vocabulary you will
need for the volunteer program
of your choice.
SPANISH
LEVELS:
Beginner:
Students develop a basic
knowledge of the language and
learn simple grammar tenses
and the daily vocabulary they
will need.
Intermediate:
Students will practice
conversation, learn the vocabulary
of their interest, and start
with the compound grammar tenses.
Students improve their understanding,
reading, writing, and listening
skills.
Advanced:
Students will practice
the most complex grammar tenses,
including the subjunctive and
perfect tenses. Students will
be able to read the newspaper,
write reports, and participate
in complex conversations with
the ability to logically debate
and defend opinions in a professional
manner.
HOME STAY
WITH A HONDURAN FAMILY:
Students will stay with a Honduran
host family. Our volunteers
are matched with upper middle
class families in the best neighborhoods
in the area. Families are selected
by school directors who are
careful to follow the school’s
standards. A private room and
bathroom and 3 meals per day
are provided. Nutritional meals
are prepared using ethnic recipes
and will vary daily. Home stays
are conveniently located, close
to the downtown mall, Internet
cafes, grocery stores, and downtown,
and a 15-minutes walk from school.
Life with a local family helps
students with a full immersion
into our Spanish program and
instruction on Latin culture
and customs. Following the language
and culture program, you have
the opportunity to extend your
host family stay with prior
notice. Any extra nights with
your host family should be paid
directly to the school by the
student. |
