Volunteer in Guatemala: Women’s Project

Overview of the Project

The Women’s project in Guatemala is designed to uplift the social status of women and provide them with more opportunities to generate their own source of income. Global Crossroad has partnered with local NGOs to create handcraft-related projects and various workshops to help educate and support the women. Volunteers who enjoy raising the bar of equality and sharing knowledge with the less fortunate will really appreciate this project.

Role of a Volunteer

Volunteers will accompany an assigned social worker to different communities, helping to organize the various workshops offered to the women: Human Rights, rights of Women, Reproductive Health, Cooking, and Handicrafts courses to show ways to earn money and help women become financially independent from their husbands.

Skills/Qualifications Requirements

Volunteers do not require any special skills or qualifications for this project except for enthusiasm about helping the Guatemalan women. Volunteers should be passionate about caring for others and very understanding to the often unpleasant situations of these women.

Room/Food/Supervision

Most of our volunteers live in a homestay with local host families. Our host families are carefully screened. They are educated, socially respected, and have hosted international volunteers in the past. A host family offers you a separate room (sometime you need to share with a fellow volunteer of same gender) and three local meals a day. The family and volunteers share use of the bathroom/shower and kitchen facilities. This also provides a local support network beyond the volunteers and program staff. Many of the volunteers consider their home stay a vital component of their Guatemalan experience.
