Teaching English in Ghana

Overview of the Project

Like in any other developing countries in the world, the demand of English is growing incredibly high in Ghana . The knowledge of English is a gateway to good and high paying jobs and this trend has lured the young generation to learn and master the art of speaking good English.

The children in Ghana are very keen to learn and improve their conversational English. Most of the schools also put extra emphasis on English education. This project helps the primary and junior secondary class children between the age of 5-10 and 11-16 to learn English and also get education on math and science. Teaching resources are available for the teachers. Ghana has 3 academic semesters a year:

1st TERM:
Start Date: January 10 to April 12
School Holiday : April 13 to May 1

2nd TERM:
Start Date: May 2 to August 4
School Holiday : August 5 to September 12

3rd TERM:
Start Date: September 13 to December 15
School Holiday : December 16 to January 1

Dates of academic semesters can change

During the school holidays, holiday classes would be organized for the school children and volunteers will be taken for sightseeing. The schools in Ghana are resource poor, and under staffed. The schools also need good teachers to teach good English to the students. Volunteers are also needed to provide theoretical and practical assistance to primary and junior secondary school math, English and science teachers in Ghana .

Role of a Volunteer

Volunteers can teach any subjects like English, Math, or Science in Primary and Junior Secondary Schools and engage themselves in the following activities:

•  Teach conversational English, Math, or Science to students who age between
5 -10 in primary schools and 11-16 in junior secondary schools
•  Read literature and improve the low comprehension level and poor pronunciation of students
•  Provide theoretical and practical assistance and aide the teachers
•  Interact with the students

Skills/Qualifications Needed

There is no specific qualification for teaching project in Ghana except fluency in English and love for the children.

Room/Food/Supervision

Global Crossroad manages room/food for volunteer. Volunteers live with the host family and we manage a separate room and local meals three times a day. Volunteer will also have 24/7 access to our office in Ghana and mobile number of our coordinators. Our staffs also visit volunteers in each 1-2 week interval as a part of the program.

Location Descriptions

Teaching English is in various towns including Accra , Kumasi and Hohoe, with shops, banks & internet cafes nearby. Ghana 's vibrant cities are renowned for its friendly atmosphere where visitors are always welcomed. It's full of contrasts: from traditional culture and history to modern infrastructure and most of the amenities you would expect from a city.

Volunteers can organize different possible excursions during and after the project to visit places of interest. There is a tourist infrastructure already in place the volunteer can use during weekends. For example: water falls, monkey sanctuary, markets, purple princess designs, mountain biking, drumming school, community based eco-tourism project, Volta river, Pottery village, hotels, Kente weaving studio and many more.
