| Overview of the Project
These healthcare projects are the perfect fit for BOTH individuals interested in pursuing a position in the medical field AND already-existing healthcare professionals looking to lend their developed, medical expertise to the underdeveloped healthcare industry of Ecuador . Volunteers in these projects assist NGOs, hospitals, clinics in their daily activities – albeit administering medication, tracking patients' medical histories or healthcare campaigns. The healthcare industry in modern-day Ecuador is less than developed, often offering sub-par facilities to its ailing citizens. Volunteers can expect to observe and interact with patients and medical professionals on a daily basis – assisting in administrative duties of reception areas and nurseries.
These healthcare projects in Ecuador are located in various locations throughout this spectacular country – both urban and rural locations. During their stay, volunteers also have the opportunity to explore and learn Spanish (except if participating in the Galapagos Islands ). These volunteer projects are ideal for enthusiastic participants who are proactive and eager to help in any way befitting various situations and unexpected conditions as required by their assigned projects.
Role of the Volunteer
Volunteers in any of the above projects are involved in various activities such as:
- Observing healthcare professionals/shadowing doctors
- Public outreach and education
- Supporting healthcare professionals (as dictated by individual experience/qualifications)
- Organizing and developing educational seminars
- Educating the general population on topics related to healthcare
- Assisting already-existing healthcare programs (health clinics, non-profits, NGOs).
Skills/Qualifications Requirements
There are no specific qualifications required since the project staff will provide any necessary orientation and training to adequately perform volunteer activities. However, beginner to intermediate knowledge of Spanish is preferred as well as individuals who are enthusiastic and/or interested in issues related to the healthcare in undeveloped countries. NOTE: participants able to furnish proof of previous healthcare experience/expertise will be allowed a higher level of patient and procedural interaction/participation.
Room/Food/Supervision
Global Crossroad provides living accommodations and three (3) meals a day with an Ecuadorian host family. Host families are carefully selected to ensure that volunteers enjoy their time in Ecuador . Volunteers are provided their own private, comfortable room. Volunteers are essentially welcomed as an additional member of their host family – participating in daily activities and being fully immersed in the Ecuadorian culture AND language. Host families are in quite, safe residential areas and usually within walking distance (or a short bus ride) from assigned projects as well as supermarkets, internet cafés, and other activities/sites of cultural significance. Details pertaining to host families and living accommodations will be provided to volunteers prior to arrival in Ecuador .
