This home away from home in Costa Rica provides a safe, educational, and hopeful environment to orphans, abandoned children, and youngster who have been removed from their homes by child services due to abuse or neglect. Currently there are over 80 children living in the home full time, divided into different houses by age. Here they are given a safe environment with appropriate guidance, encouragement, meals, and basic care.

Infants and Children: During this particular volunteering in an orphanage in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, you will primarily help children that are newborn to seven years old. Your volunteering work in an orphanage in Puntarenas, Costa Rica will be with nuns and helpers to feed, care for, play with, and nurture creativity and good manners in the children, as well as maintain a safe and clean space. This program begins in the morning with breakfast at 7:30am, and you are asked to stay at least until after lunch, which is around 12:30pm. If you choose to stay later for the children and teenagers project you should send your request in advance to the coordinator who will gladly set this up.

Children and Teenagers: During this volunteering in an orphanage opportunity in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, you are encouraged to share your specific talents or skills with the children, and the in-country coordinator will be happy to set up appropriate special projects and activities. You will work with older children in a customized project based on your skills and strengths, and also help at the homes where the children live: preparing meals, cleaning, and socializing with the older children.

This volunteer in an orphanage program in Puntarenas, Costa Rica runs in the afternoon from 2pm-6:30pm. From 2pm-4:30pm volunteers work with the older children, and then from 4:30-6:30pm with the teenagers. If you are also interested in working with the younger children in the morning they should send their request to the coordinator, who will make all necessary arrangements.

Role of Volunteer

Volunteers will take care of young children, and should do so with a caring, positive and professional attitude. You will be expected to help with whatever task (such as cleaning, feeding, playing, cooking, laundry) needs doing. Volunteers will also be asked to tutor or work with older children, and create a class or workshop for them in a field or topic the volunteer has particular skills in.

Skills and Qualifications Needed

Volunteers who have no real understanding of Spanish are advised to enroll in our language program, as having beginner or intermediate skills will lead to a more rewarding experience for them and the people who they meet and work with on their program.

Although there are no formal qualifications required to join this volunteer abroad in an orphanage in Puntarenas, Costa Rica project, volunteers are expected to have an interest in working with young people, be patient, caring, open minded and be able to identify work and do it without constant supervision.

In addition to the application fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee. You will pay your weekly fee directly to the country coordinator, who in turn will allocate it to your host family, project and other in-country support we offer to our volunteers. This way, the fees that you pay will benefit those who rightfully deserve them, and not for company profit.

The volunteering overseas in Costa Rica program fees will cover expenses that will begin on the first day of the program (usually the first or third Monday of the month) to the last day of the program. If you arrive before the first day of the program or you decide you stay beyond your program’s last day, you will be responsible for the additional expenses, which would typically be around $30 a day for room and meals at a hostel.
